ChezGiven 0
Went to see Babel last night without knowing anything about it. Stunning film, set in Morrocco, US/Mexico and Japan. Babel is presumably a reference to the tower of Babel which man built to get to heaven. The stories are all about some form of personal redemption. Highlights include a clever inter-locking story told from different points in time and a couple of mucky shots of a Japanese school girls flange Recommend it. ChezGiven 0
clever inter-locking story I've seen cleverer episodes of Alfonso Bonzo. How do you mean? I thought that each story had a character that had to face up to some form of redemption was brought together very well. I watched it with french sub-titles, so all the arab, spanish and japanese bits i had to translate but i still loved how the personal battles were brought together. BTW HF, my mates brother in law was the editor for Children of Men, hes off to the Oscars soon. Bit of a mexican connection going on.
Gemmill 44242
The Pursuit of Happyness. I quite enjoyed it but mainly because the stockbrokerage firm that Will Smith works at is on the street I used to live on. Nah, it was good. Pretty depressing mind. The tenuousness of the link between the Japanese story and the rest of the story was balderdash and piffle. BTW HF, my mates brother in law was the editor for Children of Men, hes off to the Oscars soon. Bit of a mexican connection going on. There could only be 8 or 9 cuts in the whole film Nah, he's done some fine work, fingers crossed it wins everything it's up for (which isn't enough). I don't really want to say in case it spoils it for anyone, although suffice to say that I would imagine most people are expecting the ending that they get. The desperate state he finds himself in, and the state of a lot of the people (other homeless etc) is quite depressing though.

I wasn't expecting to be blown away by this at all...Lots of 70's cinema style running....At last confirmation that Will Smith can act. Well done. I've just twigged that the suited bloke that he and his son walk past just before the credits roll is the real-life Chris Gardner (just seen a picture of him and twigged why the two exchanged a look which I didn't quite get at the time). The tenuousness of the link between the Japanese story and the rest of the story was balderdash and piffle. I disagree. Why does connectivity need to be anything other than tenuous? Fair enough, the main story is only loosely connected to the Japanese story. Having this language group in the story is inherent to the concept of the tower of babel though. You'd have to fill me in on that. I just thought Babel was a reference to the different languages used in the film (and I only deduced that from using Babel fish ). I know nothing about the history of the tower of Babel so I'd gladly be educated on the matter.

According to Genesis, when God destroyed the tower of Babel he also split human languages so that they could not act together again to build a tower to heaven. Separation of languages creates conflict in humanity. Our journey to heaven is harder. Or something like that

Separation of languages creates conflict in humanity. Our journey to heaven is harder. Or something like that So as well as being overlong and unconnected the film also failed to get across the point it was trying to make. I'm not sure I go along with you either tbh, I can see how sign language alienates the girl from the lads she wants to screw, but the language barrier doesn't stop her dad enjoying a lovely trip abroad and making freinds, it doesn't stop the kids having a great time in mexico, doesn't stop Brad Pitt and his wife getting the help and treatment they need in a foreign country. The biggest conflicts are between those who speak the same language. Between Pitt and Blanchette, between the brothers that fire the shot, between them and their father, between the Japanese girl and her father, between Gael Garcial Bernal and the border patrol. So I guess he's saying language (or race) isn't what stops us all getting on. But we all knew that anyway.

Happy Face 29
Les Diaboliques - Fun little thriller/horror, worked it out straight away though. Junebug - I wasn't as impressed as all the rave reviews led me to believe I would. A Streetcar Named Desire - "STELLA!"
