Not that many people have heard of it either. Yeah, good film that. Wasn't it actually on Film4 last night as well??? Anyway, went to see Casino Royale yesterday with Mrs Hips. Hmmmmmmmm, I have to admit I wasn't totally convinced. Lots of padding to stretch the film out unnecessarily imo. 6/10 on the hips scale. Perfectly captures the fact that a woman is the most fiendish instrument of torture ever devised to bedevil the days of man. The vile temptress in this case drags a mummy's boy plonky half way around the US, flaunting her sexuality to all and sundry, wholly incapable of stopping, making him jump through hoops all just to drive his train into her tunnel. Grant is at his very best (other than perhaps in The Philidelphia Story) and Mason is a fantastic villan. The Changeling. Very good 70's haunted house film with George C Scott on top form as usual. Bits of it were completely ripped off in The Others. Memento. Seen it loads of times and it's still brillian. When I first started watching it though I was wishing I could watch in a linear time as I just wanted the story to get going. This is the first film I've ever watched about football violence and while I did quite enjoy it, I have to admit I'm uncomfortable about how they showed these people. It all seemed a bit too glamourous. I know you did see that they took a canny beating but there were things like the lasses in the pub all buzzing round the hobbit after he'd been scraping and the music to some of the fight scenes made it seem like something out of Braveheart. He was better than you would think and his character really just got caught up with the feeling of belonging and the buzz of it without ever becoming a realy thug as such. But it still wasn't right. It's not as good as Leone's other westerns (but then again most films aren't) but it has some excellent moments and good performances from James Coburn and Rod Stieger (even if their accents are awful). Pre-emptive I must say, I've always loved that film. This week I've watched a couple of classics. Serpico - Al Pacino as a cop in a Sidney Lumet directed film fighting corruption in the NYPD. Brilliant. I hadn't seen it for years but it's even better than I remembered it. Cape Fear (the original) - great film and Robert Mitchum is about 10 times scarier than Robert De Niro in the remake. Lady Vengeance - Korean film and part of the vengeance trilogy by the same guy who did 'Old Boy'. Not quite as good as that but still very good and well worth a watch. The missus keeps falling asleep early with the bairn so I'm having to sit up downstairs and the (shite) dvd recorder we have down there is region 2 only. Frodo does the worst American accent I've heard in a long while and the English bloke sounds like a posh get trying to do a lahdahn accent. average film at best.
