David Kelly 1217
Shadow Of a Doubt - Keeping the current board trend for Hitchcock films going. Apparently it's his personal favourite of his own films. It never quite hooked me in completely. Joseph Cotten is always good value, Hume Cronyn is brilliant, the fat stupid women speech is supoib and compared with most films it's top notch, but working my way through the classics as I am at the moment it didn't compete with The Apartment, Strangers on a Train, Touch of Evil or... The Maltese Falcon - I knew very little about this tbh. Watching the oldies, you always have a few classic lines that you've seen and heard hundreds of times already, but apart from the finale that never really happened to me with this. Extraordinary for such a class film, I pissed myself at "When you're slapped, you'll take it and like it." Why have I not heard that before? Excellent stuff. The Maltese Falcon is probably my favourite film. I can watch it all the way through whenever it's on (about once a week on TCM). The whole cast is superb but I particularly like Peter Lorre. I totally agree with that assesment of Shadow Of A Doubt too. You seen The Picture Of Dorian Grey yet?

So I felt bad and didn't respond. Cheers though, I will get the DVD. Edited November 16, 2006 by Happy Face

Happy Face 29
I keep meaning to watch Brazil. You wouldn't recommend it then? I wouldn't want to put anyone off because lots of people love it, but I hate middle class posh boys doing sci-fi Hitch-hikers guide style with a passion. Guest alex
Is Baise Moi shit then? It often gets mentioned in the same breath as La Haine which I've seen a couple of times and really enjoyed.

Violent porn but with less believable characters and plotting masquerading as arthouse fare. Kermode loves it though

sweetleftpeg 0
Aye, Baise Moi just seemed to be made to shock. Just a bit of mainstream porn really.

Ted Maul 0
City of God - Possibly the best film i've ever seen. Casino Royale - Better than any of Brosnan's efforts, a tad too long though. Mads Mikkelsen is great as the stereotypical white cat stroking baddie.
Guest alex
Dog Day Afternoon - must have been about 15 years since I last saw it. 2 hours of pure class courtesy or Sidney Lumet and Al Pacino.

Happy Face 29
The Pusher Trilogy Hell of a way to spend a Sunday afternoon. I haven't had many drug problems, either in usage or deals, so I might be in no position to comment, but this trilogy kicked the shit out of Requiem For A Dream in my opinion. It doesn't moralise to the extend that RFAD did, doesn't insist than anybody so much as touching a drug will inevitably end up debasing themselves in the most heinous fashion. Rather, it makes a life of drugs (either using or dealing) look like the least appetising choice anyone could make without any sort of sensationalism, even the gruseome finale to part 3 is dealt with so matter of factly it brought to mind the horrible rape scene in Irreversible that I could hardly bare to watch. http://www.play.com/play247.asp?page=title...&P36=4HF3LB
