David Kelly 1260
Went to see Transformers last night (wasn't paying obviously). My expectations were really low given the reviews but aside from being at least half an hour too long and Hopkins being awful in it, it was a reasonably enjoyable blockbuster affair. Enjoyed it as much as most of the recent Marvel/DC films.

Howay 12496
Watched Drive and Chappie on a plane flight recently, really enjoyed both films tbh. Chappie was weird as fuck but it was a canny idea and the right length for what it was imo. I think most on here have probably seen Drive, it was one of them I always wanted to watch but never bothered with and I'm glad I finally gave it a go. Howay 12496
Aye it definitely was, I think since I wasn't fully focused on it I enjoyed it more than I would have if I'd just been sat at home watching.

Saw Baby Driver last night, stylistically it's different to Drive but there are a lot of similarities, not least that it is also in some ways style over substance. Thoroughly enjoyable though. Ayatollah Hermione 14069
Transformers and superhero films are both major, popcorn blockbusters as far as I can see. Only difference is that the scripts for the Marvel films are better and Fish has an affinity for the source material.

Bay's Transformers film have zero plot, zero time spent building the characters, they're CGI heavy, destruction-porn heavy, have terrible, terrible scripts and zero wit. They honestly had two characters who were racial stereotypes fighting a bad guy and the crux of it was a gag about robots having bollocks. The women in the films serve no purpose beyond giving the 2 dimensional leads something to rescue/ogle/roll their eyes at. They're awful films. Even the big set pieces are turd because the giant robots don't seem to have any weight to them. When characters from your childhood like Optimus Prime and Bumble Bee are clashing with their nemeses, you shouldn't be bored. I know I'm biased because I like Marvel's source material, but I was still very excited about Transformers. The early teasers looked cool, I was interested to see if, in a post Batman Begins time where an objectively ridiculous character was given new life, if Transformers could too? Bay's Transformers couldn't. These films don't even stack up against the cartoon movie from the 80s. Compare that to the biggest spectacle of the Marvel stable; the Avengers. Whedon took time to give each of the heroes a stake in the climax, the scripts were decent, there was humour and when the big CGI-fest appeared it felt more like the crescendo of a well-paced story, rather than something to distract us because it's been 5 minutes since Michael Bay blew something up. compared to tl;dr If the Marvel movies are Obama, Transformers are Trump. You're a bright lad, with usually sound judgement so it's frankly not at all possible that you enjoyed this disorienting smashycrashy horseshit as much as Marvel's fare. Unless you're Chez-ing it up and "sometimes just fancy a kebab". You can't possibly say I was wrong when I said I enjoyed it more than anything else. My enjoyment is a totally personal thing. As it goes, I enjoyed it much less than Guardians, Logan, X Men and Deadpool, a bit less than Dr Strange and Ant Man but more than the second Avengers, Civil War, the last Batman, Wonder Woman (apart from the sheer pleasure of looking at Gadot) and Suicide Squad (apart from Robie's arse). It may well be that my expectations were so low for the latest transformers that it allowed me to enjoy it more than the superhero films that I actually have some investment in the characters but whatever the reason I did enjoy it more. It is without doubt a poor film though and Bay is a poor director. The only films of his that I would ever consider rewatching are The Rock, Bad Boys and maybe The Island and The First Transformers. Edit: The new Spiderman looks horrific btw. Edited June 30, 2017 by David Kelly

David Kelly 1260
The Rock for me, Cage was on a roll at that time with that and Con Air being two very watchable action films. Even Bay's better ones have gaping holes in them mind. But if you can just turn your mind off to them there's a bit of enjoyment to be had.
