Finally watched Hacksaw Ridge, Desmond Doss is clearly a hero and his story deserves to be told but it just felt like Gibson took parts of Saving Private Ryan and Full Metal Jacket and created another film with them. Nothing new.

War is fucking awful though.

Aldo and I both enjoyed it.  Not as good as the very best war films, the start was a bit slow but the war scenes were very well done.  Of all the Oscar nominated films I've seen it's certainly the one I'm most likely to watch again.  Don't think any of this years nominations are really of the highest quality though.

Hunter Gatherer, well paced and the subtle humour appealed to me. A decent indie film.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, I'm a fan of Anderson and a massive Bill Murray fan but this bored me to tears in the end. Some funny dialogue, pllenty of colour and a great soundtrack but he's made a lot better films.

London has fallen.

What the fuck is this shit? Why has Morgan Freeman cheapened himself to appear in it? You get some films which are so shit, they're almost good. This film was so shit, it was total shit.

Donald Trump probably thinks it was a docudrama. It's probably enough to make HF's head explode.

  You don't get to watch a film of this calibre and then complain about it being shite!

A handy rule of thumb is that if Kermode is willing to spend a good amount of time ranting about a movie, it's probably not worth it.

This, Sex and the City 2, Entourage, etc.

After yonks of nagging we watched 50 shades of grey last night. Her film picking choices have been revoked for the foreseeable future after that steaming pile. Painfully awkwardly acted, weird considering that Dornan is a good actor but I guess it's difficult when the script is a complete and utter mound of shit.

Fortunately my lass thought similar so I won't be subjected to the sequel.

The sequel has received a barnstorming 1 out of 5 stars in the Guardian. Sure you aren't tempted?

 Haven't seen it (or read the book). I've seen some extracts from the latter however and found them about as erotic as the previously mentioned thought of Tim Healy and Denise Welch going at it hammer and tongs. Have these people never heard of Anais Nin? Rhetorical question, obvs

Are there any other Yakuza films that you recommend? Spotted one called Fireworks, they all seem to have Takeshi Kitano in them

Aye, he's in fucking loads of them. I'll have a think as I used to watch loads and they all seem to blur into one after a while (I know, "Reported"). However, I would recommend Zatoichi, not a Yakuza film, it's a samurai film with him in but the mood is more akin to the Sergio Leone Spaghetti Westerns (which were heavily influenced by Japanese cinema / Kurosawa anyway, as you probably know).

Another Lonely Hitman was decent, off the top of my head.
