I watched 13th last night after the recommendatiuons on here. Very bleak stuff and absolutely explained why Hilary Clinton did not get the black and hispanic vote en masse.

Aye, the 1 in 3 black men having served time stat is incredible.

Bill tried to do a mea culpa for her before the election, but couldn't help defending himself from against black lives matter.

Gonna give Manchester by the sea a go tonight

A lot of the oscar nominations this year seem like lasses films at first glance!

Watched this. I don't quite get everyone saying Casey Aflleck has joined the big leagues with his performance. He literally pulls the same face for 2 1/2 hours

Hacksaw Ridge. 9/10.

One of the most gut wrenching, realistic - battle scenes ever committed to film. Gibson shows he can be in the big leagues as a Director any time he so chooses.

Only loses a point because the first half is a bit clammy and stretched. The characters drawn too precisely with no space in the frame to ponder.

Make no mistake however this is one of the most diligent and insightful comments on war and the men caught within that black sphere you are ever likely to see.

Strange couple of weeks. It's probably been 10 years since I rated two films (Manchester by The Sea) and this so highly. :)

Really enjoyed Hacksaw Ridge, quite often saw the actor rather than the character though. Garfield was all right, Vaughan was amusing, Weaving was decent, but the performances on the whole were straight out of a 2nd tier tv crime drama.

The battle scenes were incredible and while it leant heavily towards Hollywood at the end I think the majority of those combat scenes were as jarring and uncomfortable as SPR.

Going to see Trainspotting 2 tonight. Looking forward to but I'm expecting to disappointed, as I am with Blade Runner 2. Sequels so far don't have a great success record.

I saw it too. Thought it was excellent, the best it could have been considering the material Boyle was working with. Funny, sad, thrilling but most of all nostalgic. A great homage to the original.

That site rated the latest Resident Evil movie higher than Hacksaw Ridge?

It's one of the most prestigious review sites out there.

It does come down to the individual reviewers however. Obviously I disagree with it and Hacksaw Ridge which was 16 years in the making with two very dedicated producers who had a package that wasn't easy to put together as the hero isn't the normal kind of war hero etc...With the religious angle I think Gibson is a good fit. He also brings an intensity to the battle scenes that are imo unmatched bar one or two films.

I agree with you a little bit reg the performances but I think Gibson crafted it so that there is a distancing effect from the usual camaraderie and interplay among the soldiers you normally get. The performances at camp seem forced and empty and even the Vaughn moments don't fully hit home. This device pays off when the battle starts and the charters start to come together and slowly the interplay becomes more meaningful.

There is no easy connect with empathizing with them that is normal war movie fare. The situation is meant to be uncomfortable and unbalanced with an eye to the nightmare that is to come.
