That's funny but most films plots can be taken apart like that.. Ultimately it's the overall mural that makes a good film not the nitty gritty...I don;t like the 10min rule in these films (there has to be action at least every 10min)...But that seems to be what the maj want these days..

I have no idea why they ditched the backpacking the globe "finding himself" part so abruptly. Personally I'd have had the same start, won Krypton, then when that part is set up, go to Lois Lane snooping around about unusual reports of heroic feats across America, where the description of the guy is fairly consistent. Perry White feels it's a waste of time, has her skuttle off to that crashed ship. Intersperse this story with the flashbacks of Clark Kent growing up. US drag that ship back to mainland, something goes awry and ship sets to self destruct. In pops a pre-cape Superman, has Dad chat with hologram, saves the day,big bolt of light fires off into sky. CK dons cape. Wrap up bit and pieces, lay ground work for romance between CK & LL. Cut to credits, post credit scene Zod and his band of merry men ominously approaching Earth.

Sorted.

Quite like your tinkering Fish..It's very pure and clean.

There's also a good case to be made to have had a longer period of Zodding - meeting U.N. and solving one or two minor earth issues - all proper friendly like and putting out feelers for Kal-El (with help of intelligence agencies) who is really reluctant to reveal himself even when the threats start to come thick and fast...etc. He needs to really have his back against the wall (the fact that he's quickly into action and helping the army is bad storytelling and cheap propoganda).

Ideally you want the hero with the whole world against him.

The biggest thing they missed was S struggling with the twin ideas of saving what's left of the Krypton genome or saving earth. Can't do both...

See I think a full on confrontation with Shannon's Zod could have been held until the 2nd movie, but I like your ideas. Certainly paints Zod as a strategic thinker instead of just a brawler, and if the people are rioting on the streets, clamouring for Superman to give himself up and yet he still wants to protect them... it further elevates him above the petulant urges of the rest of us. Superman is supposed to be better than us, noble and all that America uber alles horseshit.

Superman facing a Sophies choice would have been much more engaging than him disregarding the links to his people's past so casually. It would also explain why he's so willing to put himself through Hell for this planet in future films; he's already lost one world, he can't afford to lose another.

I'm going to drive people fucking mad in 2015. Bumper year for the kinds of movies I like.

Do you mean super hero films? Isn't that the case every year now? Fair enough if you enjoy that stuff. It just all looks the same to me. I did like the Batmans but even they were a bit silly. I liked Kick Ass because it was different, so I'm looking forward to the sequel, but from the trailer etc it looks to be more in line with the usual bumf. Will still probably go see it.

I saw The World's End the other week. Dreadfully clunky attempt to follow the formula of SOTD/HF. Quite funny though.

Watched the few trailers that have been released for 'Gravity',

really hoping this is a good movie, the few snippits have me hooked. Presumably a similar concept to 'Buried' which I enjoyed, but set in space which I enjoy even more.

i was thinking 'the only downside is Clooney and Bullock', but having thought about it while typing, realised that I actually like a lot of movies with Clooney in (the Thin red line, O Brother..., Up in the air, to name a few), and Bullock, well, always turns out smart on the big screen.

BTW, is there a seperate thread for trailers, couldn't find anything doing a quick search

Gawd bless terrestrial TV for letting me catch up on fillums I should have seen years ago. Tonight's special: Hot Fuzz. At least 20 minutes too long, but it made me laugh three or four times so that's already a thumbs-up in my book. Flawed but endearing.

Watched that again the other night and was bored shitless and barely laughed which was a shame as I used to love it. Bit scared to rewatch Shaun of the Dead now.

I watched a bit of Hot Fuzz the other night too. Didn't think much of it at all the first time but I really enjoyed what I watched. Got a double back with SOTD for £3 a while ago and I've never even took the wrapping off yet. Might dig it out over the weekend.

I tried watching SOTD but switched it off as it reminded me of a shit sitcom - didn't bother with Hot Fuzz.

I liked Paul though.

Those old jokes from 'Spaced' are getting a bit stretched out now...

might be something worth watching on there, there's normal movies as well like.

That's superb, thank you very much...loads of classics and poncy, arty farty shite. Most films by most top directors...

etc.

Anyone fancy watching a film together in real time and commenting on it as we go....like a match thread?
