angrysteve 0
Jack Reacher - haven't read the book so couldn't give a toss as to whether Cruise is or isn't big enough for the role. Actually quite enjoyed it but I get a sense I may be in the minority... The Hobbit - was ok, just about fell asleep at one point where it was dragging like an elephantitisised scrotum and it did look like I was watching sky sports with the higher frame rate, but otherwise enjoyable enough. Tooj 17
The Baader Meinhof Complex 2008 German film set in the 60s and 70s based around the early years of the West German violent far left group called the Red Army Faction (RAF). The story really focuses around three characters. Firstly Andreas Baader the hot headed leader of his faction within the RFA who would stop at nothing to promote his cause and this mainly revolved around acts of violence. His girlfriend Gudrun Ensslin who held similar views. Then the left-wing journalist Ulrike Meinhof who ended up meeting the other two when writing about one of their arson attacks in the late 60s, then she left her job as a journalist to join their party and partake in their guerilla activities. The film then goes onto show their struggles to try and take down their own government as well as sympathising with other similar causes throughout their era. For example at one point they end up going to Jordan to receive military training from some Palestinian rebels. It tries to hold out quite an unbiased view IMO and doesn't just sympathise with the terrorists, but also shows another side to them such as their infighting and how some of their own methods were quite ruthless and actually went too far. Really enjoyed it, especially as I like looking back at political struggles in Europe around that time. Also I don't know if it's just me but whenever I see footage from Germany and countries from the Iron Curtain around that time it looks very similar to what Sunderland city centre does now? Oh and might I add there's also some cracking sets of tits shown all the way through it too. 8.5/10 Elite Squad 2007 Brazilian film focusing on BOPE who are a special forces unit within the military police of Rio. The main character in this is Captain Nascimento and the film starts off with him talking about how corrupt the system is within Brazil due to how police officials work closely with the drug lords of Rio by taking bribes to ignore the drug trafficking and crimes related to that within the slums of Rio. The film then shows how Nascimento is struggling with balancing both the stress of his job and taking care of a wife who has recently turned pregnant. He then tries to find a way out of BOPE so his family can stay together. This involves two young officers by the name of Andre and Neto who he feels could be worthy successors to him. Not going to ruin the film but it wasn't as fast paced as I thought it would be due to its title and billing. I enjoyed the fact that it wasn't though and contained quite a bit of back story and character development. Also I'd recommend a Google of the beautiful Fernanda Machado who plays one of the characters in this. 8.5/10 Elite Squad Enemy Within Follow up to the above. Set some years later once again you're following Nascimento whose marriage has now fallen apart despite his best efforts and he's still working for BOPE. The film starts off with a botched up operation within one of Rio's prisons which then means Nascimento ends up getting sacked from BOPE. Because of the way it went down though he's actually a public hero within Rio, so to save face he actually gets promoted to an office job instead of being fully dismissed as this would lead to public outcry. Nascimento's new job now means that he is Deputy Secretary of Intelligence which in a nutshell means he's in charge of all wire taps within Rio. He then turns BOPE into a police army, organizing dozens of raids across the favelas, ordering armor trucks and a chopper for the team, raising it from 100 policemen to 350 heavy armed police officers divided into 16 tactical teams. Under his influence, BOPE frees the favelas from drug dealers, and also uses the situation to lower the number of corrupt police officers, taking over the favelas from the dealers. Due to this he gains a lot of enemies from inside his own organisation. The rest of the film then depicts these struggles and how he ends up fighting the own system that he believed in from within. Actually preferred this one to the first one, not sure why? Maybe it's because I quite like seeing things about how people try to fight corruption within their own organisation. Either way both of these are a must see. 9/
Kid Dynamite 6961
Gangster Squad - Not an epic movie by any means. More a leave your brain at the door action film that just happens to be set in the 40s/50s Good though
Tooj 17
Lincoln First of all I'm going to state the obvious and say that Daniel Day-Lewis as per usual was absolutely outstanding. Of course we can't say how much he nailed Lincoln's character as we can only go off readings as to what he was like, but it just felt like this guy's that much of a method actor he probably built himself a time machine and went back the 19th century American to get the mannerisms that he needed. I've seen this film getting rave reviews everywhere but in all honesty it didn't really grip me at all. There were some outstanding on-screen performances and I'm usually a sucker for a slow paced film that is dialogue centric, yet despite it being based around the passing of such an historic and emotionally powerful event as the Thirteenth Amendment I didn't feel at all moved by any of it. Not even John Williams could save the day for me. Also why were there no vampires? 6/

Dr Gloom 21757
Went to see life of pi with the mrs but the Peckham multiplex wasn't showing it in 3d so in let the wife persuade me to watch les miserables. That's three hours of my life I'm never getting back. Impressive production but I'll challenge any man that isn't CT to get through a film that long where all dialogue is sang and not a word spoken and not find it hard work. Such hammy over actor these days, and not in a good way like Al Pacino in his tail end career movies. Hasn't made a good film since in the name of the father. Les Mis is one of the few musicals I've got any real time for, in fact it's probably the only one I actively like as a whole - but that's on stage, with all the grandeur that entails and the option of choosing how involved you decide to become in the whole thing. I'm expecting the constant close-ups and so on in the film to provide emotional button-pressing that's already there in the music/lyrics (and then some!) so doesn't need to be hammered home additionally. Will be going to see it all the same, I'm sure. Totally under the thumb.

Enjoyed it Looks like a shit indie film and is a shit indie film. Had some interesting & funny scenes but as a narrative the pacing was all over the place and the story was contrived. I really wanted to like it. The involvement of the Porsche was excellent though.
sammynb 3342
Gangster Squad - Marvel Comics meets La Confidential (which is a much better film). Gemmill 44096
The Perks of Being A Wallflower. Really enjoyed it. I've never been a fan of Emma Watson, and as a 37 year old bloke, I'm not sure I should be anyway, but she's gorgeous in this.
JawD 99
Flight (Denzil Washington) I like him anyway so often enjoy his films. Flight is about him being the hero landing a fucked plane but being found to be pissed so manufacturer of plane want him blamed. Worth watching 7.5/10 Skyfall I'm not the biggest bond fan but did like casino royal so thought I'd try this. Similar quality to last I guess. You pretty much know what you're gonna get. 8/
Howmanheyman 32596
Argo - Very good film. As someone else said, I think it was Gemmill, Affleck is turning out to be a good director and has surrounded himself with great technicians of film making, the cinematography in Argo at times was outstanding. I loved the original, I just hope Affleck hasn't ruined it.
