Shepherd backs the managers at the Toon, but surely this is down to the fact that the club's large fanbase (couple with TV revenue) provides him with the opportunity to do this.

84735

Exactly. Pointing at chairmen of clubs that make no money and comparing Shepherd to them is ridiculous.

84750

So how come othe big clubs don't tap their fanbases so well as us ?

A straight answer will do

84797

Sorry, are you suggesting that our attendances are down to Shepherd's ability to "tap the fanbase"? It's nothing to do with that - Newcastle get big attendances in spite of Shepherd, not because of him.

84805

we got big crowds pre-1992 did we ?

84832

Is Shepherd taking ALL credit for the worldwide boom in football's popularity now? I also didn't realise Shepherd took over as chairman in 1992.......

Doesn't that defeat your argument though, surely that's why Shepherd is better at doling out the cash than pre-1992?

84837

speculate to accumulate Alex...small time chairman [like the ones I've named] play safe rather than play ambition

As we did ourselves pre-1992 and the Halls and Shepherd

No Alex, it's BECAUSE Shepherd doles out the cash that we have big attendances. The attendances initially started because of the Freddie Shepherd pied-piper effect.

LM's chasing his tail tbh.

As you well know, Shepherd STILL isn't the majority shareholder....he's just the man who carries out the boards wishes .....

Like I said, some of you don't realise what a shit chairman really means, although I've gave you enough examples

But Bobby Robson has said he signed Kluivert - he has an axe to grind so could easily say different - and Souness may be the biggest idiot ever to manage NUFC but he's nobodies yes man

84839

Bobby doesn't know what fucking day it is tbh, you could just as easily argue he said he signed Kluivert so he didn't want to be portrayed as someone who wasn't in control of the club, especially as he's throw his hat into the ring for every job since. Bellamy said the chairman had done well to bring in players of Kliuvert's calibre after we signed him, he wouldn't lie, would he?

no, Bellamy doesn't lie. You know what this comment means Alex, the club met his pay demands is what it means. But there is my point proven again, punching our weight - even though he was shit which I correctly forecasted .......

Personally I would credit John Hall for turning us into a big club from a sleeping giant; it has almost nothing to do with Shepherd. Shepherd has reinvested a lot of the club's money (not his own or ours), but overall to very little effect. If you judge him on results, which surely you should, he has been a complete failure. And this is before you take into account his horrendous PR gaffs and the fact he awards himself a salary and dividend far in excess what is considered justifiable by most experts.

Leazesmag, time and time again you use the argument that we have had worse chairmen in the past as an argument to support Shepherd. Football was in a different era then, it's a bygone age, and as such it is entirely irrelevant. Why don't you compare Shepherd's performance to the other big clubs like ManU, Arsenal or Liverpool? This is where we should be because of our support, and whatever you say, that support does not exist because of Shepherd.

Thank you Renton, for putting it so succinctly. I was getting dizzy following the argument round in circles before then.
