Thierry Henry as well. Bought as a winger but they wasted him as a striker.

And Paul Warhurst for that matter who played in the very same Blackburn side as Tim Sherwood. What an utter tit!

Viana, brought in as a defensive midfielder…

I’m delighted to concede I was wrong.

I’d also say that the consensus on this board in mid-January was relegation beckoned. Even fish was pessimistic at that point. Gemmill was very much the minority voice.  Makes the turnaround all the more impressive. We have been a completely different team since February

Prove it.

Well! Take an hour or so away from here and come back to a soft cock group therapy session. "We had our reasons....it was an unprecedented set of circumstances.... no one could have predicted...."

And yet someone did. Pathetic, the lot of you.

ffs. Do I have to? Do you not remember being much less optimistic than that time we narrowly survived relegation under Ashley when you played the Gemmill role?

If you want credit, you have to do your homework.

I was less optimistic because I thought 45pts might be beyond us. I wasn't pessimistic. Unlike some OTHER people, who shall remain nameless.

At the time (wasn't posting on here) I said we'd almost certainly buy our way out of the danger zone in January.

The reality is I don't think we did. Sure, we made a few decent additions but the big difference has been the output of some of those players who were here under Bruce. Krafth, Fraser & Joelinton in particular. The MSM media love to focus in on the fact we spent £90m in January, but they're conveniently missing the context - we lost Wilson and Trippier to long term injuries and Wood hasn't fired on all cylinders from a goalscoring perspective. Therefore the narrative that we bought our way out of relegation isn't accurate.

And I'm delighted to have been proven wrong on that detail. Shows what a fucking great coach we have in Howe. How many will raise their hand and admit they got it wrong where he was concerned?

No I was right about him too as it happens.

I'm well aware you were, i'm talking about others who clearly weren't.

I've always rated him. I never understood the clamor for Emery. Yes he's achieved stuff on the European stage but I don't think he ripped up trees when he was at Arsenal.

You're welcome.

No. I was still optimistic.  Where we were to expect 45pts would have been wildly optimistic, but I was assured of our survival. I was chief willy waver until Gemmill usurped me with his bluster.

Sounds like you failed to harness the full power of the narrative. Delivery, as we know in this day and age, is nine tenths of the truth.

you were 50/50 on relegation in november,

I'm about 50/50. But I'm not particularly worried about relegation.

I am worried that the new owners seem to be fumbling each appointment. Everything is taking far longer than it should. I hope they're learning quickly and I hope that once the DoF is in place everything else ticks along much more quickly.

i was 70/30 in january so we weren't a million miles away.

I think we’re 70/30 going down at this stage. It’s going to take 3-4 quality signings, some outstanding work on the training ground and a top 6 run of form from here

ok, so pessimistic was an overstatement , but you definitely weren't as bullish as gemmill this time around.

i was pretty pessimistic until we started winning games, but you should expect nothing less.

Said before you need a bit of luck in football. Burn might’ve been a better fit than our main CB targets. Especially for a relegation battle. I likened it to SBR wanting Jeffers and Zenden but getting Bellamy and Robert instead. You could say the same with Howe perhaps not being the first name in the owners’ list

Same can be said with Keegan wanting Salako and ended up with Ginola instead ... for the same money.

totally. it feels like the owners stumbled across the perfect manager at the right time, despite being our second choice.

he was the right pick to keep us up and could identify the players needed to survive this season - without the help of a full time DoF. the work howe did picking the likes of targett and burn was crucial. if emery had led the recruitment team, would he have chosen so well after failing to get the likes of digne and bottman?

i confess i wasn't sure about howe when he came in. it felt like a bit of a punt, but i absolutely love everything about the bloke and i hope he's here for 5+ years

Right, I was 50/50 in November, before the we'd signed anyone in the winter window and when the table looked like this;

image.thumb.png.7c44661011e665f8b03bde91a8960980.png

Rock bottom, no wins, worst defensive record in the league, 3pts off 19th, 7pts off safety.

You were 70/30 in favour of relegation after we'd signed Trippier and Wood and had actually won a game and the table looked like this;

image.thumb.png.77172532f291a3ba3dfe409fc5c29f11.png

19th, 3 pts off safety.

i'm not denying i was pessimistic, it's my natural state when things aren't going well. and things clearly were going terribly.

we had managed a single win in 20 games, had just lost to cambridge and watford. the gap to safety wasn't that big at that stage but if you remember we were playing like we'd forgotten how to win and there was no new manager bounce. howe's work on the training ground didn't start having an affect on performances or results until the leeds game. we were pretty much as bad as bruce's newcastle until around then.

I don't disagree with any of that.

However, we are not the same. Even when we were 20th in the league without a win, I was still only 50/50.

What was Gemmil, at that point? Silent, I'll bet.
