They'll have 5,000 fans up, at least a quarter, probably more, will have a PL team they also support*, (They're fucking southern so probably 3/4s). Anyway, I'm sure they'll be quick to take the piss if we fuck this up. *Even Michael Gray has admitted he supports Man U as well as Sunderland so I suppose it's natural for a lower league side?

Dr Gloom 22177
our legion of new saudi fans will be clamouring for a statement signing, apparently - a high-profile player whose name they can print on the back of their replica shirts. the start of the window might be about making solid if unspectacular signings in positions where we're weak. the final week could be about getting in a box office player or two

Ayatollah Hermione 14059
Glad to read the bit about how they were shocked at how little the club staff were on. If anything, in the long line of things that do, sums Ashley up, it’s that.
Gemmill 46064
Some expansion of the key bullet points called out in the tweet. Although there's lots of other positive stuff in the article. There's lots going on beyond what's happening/not happening on the pitch, by the look of it. Interviews for a chief executive are taking place. Just as with the search for a sporting director, it is being handled by an outside agency, although all final decisions will be led by the board. The hope is this will be completed “over the next few weeks”. Why is the position so important? “When the CEO comes in, everything accelerates,” one source says. “That’ll make a massive difference — they’ll set the tone for everything. That’s when the whole place goes up.” Newcastle expect to hire a sporting director or director of football first, and this is “likely to be within the next month”. The Athletic reported that Dan Ashworth, Brighton’s highly regarded technical director, is among those who have been interviewed for the role. “They have to be the right people,” a senior figure said. “The club means so much to fans. We have to make sure it’s people who understand that and get it.” There will be a “complete refurbishment” of Newcastle’s training ground this summer. To date, improvements have been limited to a few morale-boosting measures put in place when players have been travelling. Ice baths have been significantly upgraded; the food is better; television screens, which used to be stuck on Sky Sports News, now display a countdown to matches and an itinerary for the day’s sessions. “Newcastle have suffered historically with injuries so we’re keen to understand the science behind that,” one of the senior figures says. A completely rebuilt training facility is probably “three or four years away” but it will rival any in the division. The likelihood is that this will involve relocation, an area of expertise for Reuben, whose family are long-term property investors on Tyneside. “We’ve done a lot of work on this already,” one figure says. “We’ve got a good steer on what’s possible. It’s going to be exciting.” The owners have regular informal dialogue with the first-team squad, beyond visiting the dressing room after the disappointing FA Cup defeat to Cambridge. “There’s much better communication with players,” one dressing-room source says. “There are messages after games, either via the manager or the captain. We get a ‘well done’ or a ‘keep going, we’re in this together’. That means something.” The Nine Bar at St James’ will “soon” be renamed Shearer’s in honour of Alan Shearer, Newcastle’s record goalscorer and former captain and manager. This reverses a contentious decision taken under Ashley. Discussions have also taken place with Shearer, a columnist for The Athletic, about bringing his statue onto club land — “where it belongs,” according to a senior source. At present, it stands just outside. Results have been difficult to stomach but there is satisfaction with Howe’s wider impact since replacing Bruce. “He’s a great coach and a brilliant guy. He’s obsessed with keeping us up — he works all day and night,” one of our sources says. “He’s so professional. We’re delighted to have him.”
