I think that's a fair point, however the furlough scheme was brought in to save jobs.

Your firm is using the scheme to do just that as most of it's employees will be on the same or simliar wages. When the scheme ends 31st oct hopfully no body ill be paid off, but some might.

The reason football clubs or certainly Premier League clubs are targeted for using furlough is because most of it's staff are on 50k,60k plus wages per week.

Then they use the scheme to pay the rest of the staff on normal wages to penny pinch, well ashley does. The rest of the Premier league clubs don't.   ( I think relagated Norwich are using it as well )

When the scheme ends I doubt very much many any staff will be made redundant.

If a Premier league club can afford to pay those type of wages to many footballers, how can they possibly pay people off when the scheme ends ?

Ashley is using the scheme because he can, legally but it's morally wrong imo.

I can understand lower league teams like sunland using to scheme to save jobs of course.:D I think the JTS will for sure save jobs in the lower league, but not all them.

The top brass at my company will be on footballers wages too.

Not sure that having an issue with billionaires using tax payers money to furlough people unnecessarily is virtue signalling.

It's not unnecessary if the alternative is to lay them off because there's no work.

The alternative at NUFC is Ashley puts his hand in his pocket and takes staff out of furlough. Like every other club has

Well every company could do that but it's not realistic, hence the furlough scheme. Despite the players wages, the club isn't exactly hugely profitable compared to other businesses using the scheme.

Every football club in the league HAS done that, so it can’t be that unrealistic.

Apart from Ashley

So what? Should Ashley cover the furlough costs for all of his other businesses too? He's not even that cash rich, much of his wealth is in assets.

With many companies, the people on furlough will represent a large percentage of the company’s outgoings. With PL clubs it’s a drop in the ocean. I do agree football clubs are a soft target though

Well it’s already been established that he claimed furlough payments whilst making sports direct warehouse staff go back to work.

Defending Ashley using your taxes to keep his money in his own pocket is a strange hill to die on

I'm not exactly defending that. I'm saying that football clubs are small-fry in terms of profitability compared to othet companies using the scheme. Let's not forget the hit to the clubs matchday income too. Ashley covering all of it would be a noble gesture and good p.r, but I don't agree with the clamour and expectation for him to.

I suppose all the other business owners that have been using the scheme are skint. He's as entitled to use it as anybody. It'd have cost him tens of millions every month to cover the furlough costs of all of his employees. It wouldn't bankrupt him but it's not a realistic expectation

Radical socialist policy? Or loading the taxpayers with decades of debt to keep their mates companies afloat?

They didn’t have any other choice but to bring in a furlough policy, but if you think it was done altruistically then you’re mad

Putting words into my mouth. I'm for the policy and think it should be extended, like Germany's, not once have I said anything about the government's motives.

Fucking hell man

So what's the policy then? If you have 999 million use the scheme but a billion then you can't? Oh but you can't lay anyone off either you have to pay them whilst your business has no revenue. I mean I get and share the disdain for billionaires, but you're being silly.

the job retention scheme isn't just the biggest or most radical socialist policy the tories have every put forward - it's the biggest and most radical socialist intervention from any UK government ever.

the UK economy was almost entirely nationalised for six months. it was the right thing to do, of course, but it is unquestionably radical and socialist. the tories are trying to withdraw the support too quickly but getting the timing right is difficult - we are going to be paying for this for a long, long time.

I refuse to give the government credit for the furlough scheme. They had no choice. And it’s suddenly not that radical when you consider just about every country in the EU did exactly the same.

Cummings, Boris, Raab, Gove, Hunt, Patel et al can all burn in hell for me. They stole Brexit and fucked the nation for generations, completely bolloxed COVID resulting in massive loss of life and continue to stoke hatred on Immigration meaning the likes of Farage and Tommy R now have a voice and casual racism is alive and kicking again in all walks of life.

Anyone defending them is either a cunt or stupid.

More costly to the taxpayer because they dithered over lockdown too. It’s not like it’s their money

J69 arguing with himself. Nobody has credited the government as far as I can see. Not in this thread anyway. Most reasonable people can pass judgement on a single policy without being in favour of those who passed it. Ironically those who don't seem to be able to can usually be found complaining about how polarised politics have become because of social media.
