Tdansmith 3207
As much as i like Chris Hughton he went right down in my opinion of him when he defended Hemed's stamp on Yedlin saying that he did not show intent. Absolute bollocks Chris.

Merino was the best player on the pitch, first half in particular. Everything went through him. If anything, Brighton seemed to out-Rafa us, in that they were compact, organised and very deep. The ball from Merino to Shelvey around the 83 minute mark which was phenomenal. Indicating that Merino will find him if they're playing together. I thought Perez was awful first half and Joselu may need a spell out of the side too. Gayle would've had two today. Atsu had Bruno on toast in the 1st half so should have been used more and more. Aye we played a similar style to each other in the championship as well. We'll fare better against sides that are better than Brighton on paper because they won't be as well drilled at set pieces and who aren't going into the game as underdogs that we have to break down. Ritchie had a poor game by his standards and our final ball was lacking from all the creative players. Joselu adds a lot to the team, but by christ he needs to score some of the opportunities that he does well to get into the right positions for. But for one poor bit of defending, or had we taken one of our chances we'd have got the draw we deserved.
Dr Gloom 21807
That one big chance Joseph had he should have at least tested the keeper. If he'd just looked up he could have placed it by it was head down from the moment he got the ball under control. It's a tricky one for Rafa: do you play the striker who provides a target and links the play, but who can't finish, or do you go for the lad who banged then in last year, offers an out ball with his pace and get get in behind defences but who can't contribute as much with his back to gol? Why not play them both?

The Fish 10698
Playing both strikers would leave us with 2 in the centre and I'm guessing Benitez prefers 3 players around that area, even if the 3rd is just a busy #10 like Perez. Should mean we can stifle their play more and (with a better #10) still provide an attacking threat. We should play Mitr, he holds up play and bangs 'em in* * for his national team

Dr Gloom 21807
joselu could play slightly deeper as a target and have gayle further up the pitch. i don't think the shape would have to change that much. i would understand not trying it if we had an outstanding number 10. Maybe. He's not played there before though, has he? Isn't this similar to when people see a centre back who can trap and pass a ball, and people call for him to be played as a defensive midfielder? Yeah, all we're after is consistency. It's not some kind of anti-Newcastle agenda, and I get why the stamp wouldn't be as interesting given they've recently covered one, but we don't seem to benefit from these kinds of things as much as we suffer for them. I don't see his role changing much, other than him playing a bit deeper. Perez is struggling to control the ball as well as our centre halves right now. And has he played a single defence splitting pass yet? I can't remember him even providing an assist yet this season Edited September 25, 2017 by Dr Gloom

I'd be tempted to play a 4-1-4-1 Hayden sat deep, Shelvey and Merino in the centre with Joselu given the unenviable task of relieving pressure, winning freekicks and so on. Dr Gloom 21807
i don't know what shape peg perez is, or what size hole he's supposed to fit in. i don't see why joselu couldn't work with gayle playing off him, and the rest as they were behind them.
