They'll have a book value at the point that the extension is negotiated. That book value should be amortised across the remaining (extended) contract length.

That's how I assume it will work.

So, buy a player for £100m on a 5 year deal, that's a £20m amortisation charge per year.

If at the end of 2 years, you extend their contract by 2 years, you have:

Book value: £60m (£100m minus 2 x £20m annual amortisation charge)

Newly extended contract length: 5 years (original 3 plus 2 year extension)

New annual amortisation charge: £12m per year for the next 5 years.

That's some mighty fine maths right there.

Pity that contracts can only be amortised across five years so none of it matters in Palmer's case.

Bear in mind he signed a 7yr deal and, as I understand it, the amortisation goes across 5yrs. So his £42.5m fee is spread across those 5yrs, not 7, and certainly not these extra 2 years.

The fee was £42.5m (£8.5m p.a.), less the year he's served there leaves £34m, so the yearly commitment drops to £6.8m.

Did you miss those words? How I responded is how a normal contractual situation works but I because don't memorise all the PL's stupid rule changes, I might have messed up.

However. The most instructive thing here is that I clearly could have told you FUCKING ANYTHING and you would have believed it.

So THAT'S INTERESTING.

Manchester United have been offered the chance to sign England defender Ben Chilwell by Chelsea after the 27-year-old was told he does not feature in boss Enzo Maresca's plans. (Talksport)

Chelsea taking the piss :)
