Was chatting with a few lads tonight.  A couple of them were saying how modern football is boring.  I am not sure tbh.  I think some of the games that are billed as the top games can be, but haven't they always?

My involvement in football has fallen off a cliff tbh, not sure if it’s my age or just lack of enjoyment. 
 

Tbf everything seems to matter more when you’re younger. I remember being a teenager, I was playing football everyday. Watching whatever football was on the tv, just loved it. 
 

Just turned 40, I maybe watch 2 full games a month now. Just other things I would rather spend my time on.

 

I despise the modernisation of football, i.e idiots on YouTube who are factually know nowts, just making coin off other idiots who love the game. Sky sports news 24 hour rolling coverage that has nothing of value, the internet statisticians who can’t kick a ball straight but know the percentages of a cunt hair. Talksport lowest common denominator shite that appeals to morons, baiting calls and clicks. Presenters on the live match doing all of the above. That stuff is boring. 
 

What never changes is the feeling when your team beat a bigger team or smash a rival. It’s the reason lads in the crowd cheer a thumping tackle more than a world class pass. It’s what you feel rather than what you know.

Nothing will top the top four era of Benitez, Mourinho, Wenger and Ferguson for being absolutely boring as fuck for the "big" games. They stank out the league and the CL regularly.

I’m haven’t been this interested in football since the KK/SBR days tbh.

 

Yes, there are myriad things wrong with the modern game and the way it is run, which we have discussed to death on here. But it’s nice to watch the club have a go again after more than a decade of Mike Ashley, which almost turned me off football for good.
 

I say almost, Ashley led to apathy and defeats bothered me less but I never stopped watching our games, even though I felt like a masochist at times watching one of McClaren or Bruce’s teams serve up more shite on a dodgy buffering stream.

I must admit I’m the opposite. I rarely even watch us if we’re live on tv now. Just not interested really. Watch the highlights, although even then not always. Not sure what it is but just feel disconnected from it all. I still like to see us do well and follow the results but that’s about it. It’s more than just the Mike Ashley effect. I’ve got very little interest in popular culture of the last couple of decades or so too. Oddly it doesn’t even bother me much on the whole

My brother in law doesn't miss a game if they're on TV. Where's me, if there's a choice of being out on the bike or meal or whatever I can easily miss the football. It's not my be all and end all. A bit like strawb said really. When you're younger you love it. Live and breathe it. Maybe it is just part of aging and seeing there is other stuff

i'm the same on that point. i pretty much still dress like i did in my 20s, listen to the same music, have the same interests etc so in that sense i'm stuck in the past - i haven't adopted any age-appropriate hobbies either. a lot of people my age seem to be into gardening, golf and cycling, but i'm not interested in any of that. 

 

football has been a constant since i was a kid. i don't care as much as i did in the 80s/90s but i care more than at any point since then. the ashley era combined with the sky obsession with the "big six" etc almost turned me off but i still kind of enjoy our status as underdogs, despite having the richest owners going.

Haven’t completely checked out of football but gone back to grassroots stuff. Plus inevitably, misty-eyed nostalgia  With popular culture I dig into loads of stuff from the past. Just not a lot that recent. With you on the hobbies. Fuck that shit. Except hiking. I pretty much always liked that though
