ewerk 30593
You're being a bit generous to Daryl Murphy. I'd have him down as average. The problem is that all of the players that you've marked as good are likely to look average at best this season in the PL.

Clark............ Probably one of the best buys for the price. Hanley......... A championship player and nothing more. Lejeune........ Has the potential to be our best CB sin ce Colo at his best. Lazaar........ Not seem much of him. Manquillo...... Jury is still out but has potential to come good. Diame...... I can't quite work him out. He's a 10% feast and 90% famine player. Hayden..... A decent player who can progress given the right encouragement/environment. Merino..... Looks to be quality but has to prove it very quickly and consistently. I have high hopes. Ritchie..... Top player who can thrive if Rafa allows the team to flow. Atsu...... A class player but needs to show it consistently and as above. J.Murphy..... Far too early to make any judgement on this lad. Needs game time to get into the swing. Finger crossed he will. Gayle..... Sell him if he's going to be left isolated or doing headless chicken runs. Either partner him up or let him go. D.Murphy Joselu.... Played correctly and given the service...especially with Gayle as a partner, I think this lad can thrive at Newcastle. It's all down to tactical Mr negative to allow it to happen, because Rafa's negative tactics would make a young Shearer struggle. Bad/Not VfM 3 Average 3 Good/VfM 6 Jury's Out 5 Think that's a pretty good strike rate thus far, but if his latest signings don't pan out it could go the other way very quickly. It's not the signings that are bad, it's the way Rafa uses them.

The problem is that all of the players that you've marked as good are likely to look average at best this season in the PL. D.Murphy was value for money. Brought in for what, £2-3m? sold for £2m. Scored a few important goals, consistent performer. Good signing imo. Oh aye, but that squad was bought to get us back in the top flight. We needed a root and branch overhaul of the squad because the players he inherited either wanted out (Krul, Janmaat, Tiote, Townsend, Sissoko, Wijnaldum, Cisse) or weren't going to be worth a damn in the Championship. So Benitez spent £55m on 11 players, some didn't pan out, some were all right and some did very well. Job done imo. If we'd signed players in January I'd have expected them to be the kind of player that could perform in the Premier League, rather than more Championship fodder. Unlikely that we would have brought in Lejeune, but maybe players like Townsend or Merino? Maybe even just agreeing terms for Abraham? 35 minutes ago, wykikitoon said: Whats VfM Value for Money. wykikitoon 20129
Going on the VFM, I would agree with Murphy. Are you (and others including people in the media) saying that the players bought were for the Championship and then a new squad needed for the Prem? Expect for Gayle, Ritchie, Clarke and Hayden maybe?

There can be no argument that players were bought for the championship in many of the cases and you only have to look at contract length to show that. Darryl Murphy stands out as one legitimate player that was bought for the championship. Hanley on a 5 year contract suggests that Rafa had higher hopes for the lad. And so on. That squad was built for one purpose; an immediate return to the top flight. Bearing in mind the squad he inherited, the limits on what he could bring in, and the uncertainty around his and Ashley's future at the club. We should have used the January window to show ambition, show direction and show certainty. Buy Townsend, buy/loan Merino, bed them in. Agree deals for Lejeune, + whomever else. That says "We're going up automatically, and we know what our squad is going to look like come August. Then, when everybody else is spending over the odds on players, our business is all but done, the squad is accustomed to Benitez's style and we can concentrate of shifting players like; Darlow, Haidara, Saivet, De Jong, Riviere, etc.

It makes no sense, at all.

Dr Gloom 21915
It hiit was pretty obvious the side Rafa built to win promotion needed at least 5-6 players signed over this and the last transfer window to improve the first team. That hasn't happened. Budget constraints have resulted in more squad filler signings.
Park Life 71
It's clear Rafa didn't get any of his first choice signings and has had to make do with players lower down the list due to budget squeeze. Can't see how he can be blamed for any of these players.

Those two players were bought for the Championship, Hanley was 25 and could have proven a stalwart, Diame had shown glimpses of quality in previous campaigns. Few had high hopes for Clark and yet now he's spoken of as our 2nd choice CB behind Lejeune, same could have been true for Hanley. Diame could have proven the goal scoring midfielder he'd shown glimpses of and may have been an alternate to Shelvey. It makes no sense to offer them 1 year deals, especially when, at the beginning of the campaign we weren't guaranteed promotion. Also, those players' agents would not have accepted deals where the power lay so heavily in the clubs favour. Also, the contractual negotiations would not have been Benitez task, that's the job of Charnley and Barnes. It makes sense if you take the broader view into account and don't look at things through an outdated, narrow lens.

Few clubs are the same as us though. We should have the ability to select from a larger pool than, say, Bournemouth. Last time we came up we were blessed with a squad that was to all intents and purposes a Premier League side. The foreign stars that hung around were not only committed to getting us back up, but were of sufficient quality to be head and shoulders over the Championship. that wasn't the case this time around. Say West Ham go down this season, but retain the majority of their good players. they'll romp the league, then return with a lower table Premier League side. If they go down and lose their stars, they'll need an overhaul to bounce straight back, they'll need the money to accomplish that, and that overhaul may leave them with a squad of Championship players like ours. but if Burnley go down, they've not got want-away stars, so could bounce straight back without an overhaul. I'd rather we spent that money in the loan market until we're better equipped to buy better players instead of lumbering ourselves with shite that we can't get rid of. We've come up with crap that we can't shift and fucking added to it, wasting a load of cash in the process. I'll change my mind if we sign 3 top players by next week.
