The mental thing for me is that Murphy is out performing Gordon on the metrics that matter - he has 6 goal contributions to Gordon’s 4. He got 4 of those in the last two games alone.

I’m not for one second claiming he’s better than Gordon, but he’s definitely better than we all give him credit for IMO.

Agreed

But in a Monguique type defence of Gordon. The last two games he's started on his preferred LW he's scored on and assisted one and looked back to his best.

Meh. Gordon got the assist for Murphy's first and got the assist to the assist for his second. WHat this shows is that you shouldn't focus on individual players but how they play together. Peace, man.

Absolutely agree with both of you. I’m not in any way trying to claim Murphy is on the same level as Gordon - he absolutely isn’t. But he’s far better than any of us give him credit for.

With players like Murphy (and Miggy, Longstaff, Burn etc) we seem to focus more on the things that didn’t go well over the things that did more often than not). Murphy scored twice and we all talk about and dwell upon the three he ballooned.

By we I am not speaking about TT, but the wider fan base here.

RW seems a lot better with him on it over Miggy or an out of place Gordon or Barnes. Aye, it needs an upgrade but given Schar’s recent form (and advancing age) I’m starting to see why our priority was RCB in the summer.

Murph absolutely could be upgraded as starting RW.

But - He was in position to score 5 he converted two of them that’s 40% conversion rate. As a team our conversion rate, this season, is 7.5% goals/shots, Brentford are best at 16.6%. Two of the ones he missed were on his weaker left foot too.

He gives balance to the team allowing others to play in their best positions and having the same player in front of him regularly must help Tino, he’s still a kid and chopping and changing at RW won’t be doing him any favours at all.

I think that's been especially true in recent times because I think Tino turns into Miggy when he gets near the opposition box. He doesn't know what to do, whether to cut in or go wide, pass it back or cross - because he hasn't been able to build up that understanding with the player in front of him.

Keep him as a player for now, he's completely untested as a hat maker.

The fucking gall to make that kind of joke after your behaviour in the joke thread, it's almost impressive.

You can get COMPLETELY fucked. That was a great joke whereas the joke thread is WALL TO WALL abominations.

My Bill Withers joke is beyond reproach.

Hate to be the voice of reason here, I love Murphy and he seems a great lad.

But those are his ranks against our own players. If he is, what looks like, our most productive player (apart from Isak I am guessing) then that’s a pretty terrible statistic that is backed up by our lack of goals this season.

It covers last season as well when we had no problems scoring.

He’s just hugely under appreciated tbh.

Now remove his goals from the last 2 games and do the table again  . This is the Almiron effect. One swallow doesn't make a Summer.

He's a reasonable squad player, but IMO, is noticeably our weakest player on the pitch most weeks. And Howe knows it, which is why we've been linked with a shit ton of RWs

Sorry, I don’t under appreciate him. I think he is limited and we should aim higher.

Good lad, good player. But where are we aiming?

To be fair, if we removed the last 2 games he'd still be 4th for minutes per goal because he's basically only competing with about four and a half other players who's job it is to score goals.

But seriously to the general discussion we don't have natural goalscoring 8s (Willock maybe but he's injured more often than not). We don't play a 10. We don't have a backup striker who isn't either a crock or a kid. We need big goal numbers from our wingers. I love Murphy. He offers a lot to the team and squad in terms of effort and attitude. But he has 5 PL goals in the last season and this season combined. His first goals of the season were this last match.

As a winger playing in our system he probably needs to produce around minimum 10 goals per season from that position to warrant being the permanent solution. He's nowhere near that, obviously, with 5 goals in a season and a half. I would love for Murphy to stay at the club and be an impact sub in the future behind a player of Gordon's quality (or better) on the RW. I think Murph is comparable to Barnes on the other wing in terms of value to the team. Barnes offers more goals. But Murphy offers more everywhere else.

Gordon, by comparison, when on form, can do better than both of them what they do best respectively. That's what we need in a RW to keep progressing.
