Grenfell tower tragedy

Has it been noted that the Sun had a journalist pass himself off as a victim's friend in order to get into the hospital to interview him? Normal classy behaviour from them.

They do it through TV and computer screens ;)

That stupid dickhead Obama started it and it's a complete bastardization of the word. Optics or Optique refers primarily to field glasses or rifle sights.  If you wan to say public perception then say it...And everyone can understand what it means. Optics is irregular usage.

Yeah but it's quicker, innit :D

No. Cause it doesn't mean anything. It's another American language plague. If an actor says ruf instead of roof I turn the telly off. :D

You don't think it's fairly self evident?

 Not really. I've only ever really heard it used in regard to spirit measures or camera lenses. I'm sure that Argos bloke on youtube uses it a lot though

Argos bloke. You mean Sargon? I don't know if he has but tbh, I stopped watching him once he threw in with the Tories at the GE, so who knows.

It's not a word. It's a meaningless Americanisation. Stop using it or die.

How very French.

Without word development we'd be cumpkinless. And we can all agree that would be a tragedy.

Perfectly cromulent words embiggen the language.

It's looking like nobody has done anything illegal and that the fault lies squarely with government not toughening regulations.

I have no idea how anyone is sleeping in a similar block. Country definitley needs a major overhaul.

Think there is a big point being missed here.

The cladding was flammable and went up quickly, which spread the fire. But these are pre-cast buildings and with appropriate fire stopping in the rest of the building the cladding may have burnt itself out with minimal internal fire spread. If the refurb of the building included interior works then the fire stopping should have been renewed post works and could have saved a lot of lives. It is a legal requirement to install correct fire stopping. This is where I think there may be significant differences between this block and others using similar cladding systems, and where someone will go to prison.

I think I said further up about National Grid saying there was a gas issue with the building.

The cladding should have been provided with fire stops at each floor and around penetrations.  Looking at the way it went up and only taking 15mins to go from the 4th storey to the roof it doesnt look like these were installed.

Optics is a field of physics.

Lammy got it spot on when he called it corporate man slaughter. Someone is to be held to account.

This stuff will be on hundreds of renovated blocks.

I've worked on several in Newcastle, Leeds and Glasgow which have the same stuff.

Thats just renovated council blocks.

I'd be willing to bet that loads of the new student accommodation blocks which have sprung up everywhere will be covered in it.

There's going to be some massive retro-fitting programmes coming soon.

Theresa May has had to be hurried out of a church before she was lynched

Boris is getting pelters from firemen for claiming fire deaths have gone down when all they have done is change the criteria to exclude the many fatalities from smoke inhalation

Even Sky and the Daily Mail are giving them grief
