Dr Gloom 21915
That's what concerns me. It's going to take smashing our transfer record just to get a bog standard premier league player. We won't be competing at the top end in this crazy market. I can see us breaking our record this summer by a bit but in Ashley's drive for value, I think we'll be gambling more on Johnny Foreigners than those with premier league experience, unfortunately. I can see us breaking our record this summer by a bit but in Ashley's drive for value, I think we'll be gambling more on Johnny Foreigners than those with premier league experience, unfortunately. We will have to. Swansea are quoting £50m for a player who just barely helped them survive relegation last season. I'm not sure I can ever see a time when Ashley will sanction a deal of that amount but he certainly wont after we've just spent a season in the championship and missed out on the massive increase in tv revenue from last season. We have to face the facts that despite clubs like Bournemouth and Watford being smaller than us, that they have benefited massively from the improved sky deal and have more spending power than us this season. So if we're looking at bringing players with premier league experience (especially at this stage of the window), it's going to be players that aren't going to be very exciting. There's much more value to be had from abroad but obviously that comes with a risk as they've no experience here. But as Stawb says, a lot of the team from about 9th downwards are largely filled with players who you wouldn't be excited about us looking at. There's no reason that with a manager of Rafa's ability that we can't do what some of them have done and create a team that can compete despite the lack of superstars. Tbh I'd rather have that than a team of supposed stars that looked like they couldn't give a fuck like last time.
ewerk 30602
Quote Rafa Benitez has demanded Newcastle United make an improved bid for Norwich City winger Jacob Murphy as he grows increasingly irritated by managing director Lee Charnley’s failure to sign his transfer targets. Norwich are reluctant to sell the England Under-21 international and have already turned down a bid of around £8m from the Magpies, but an exasperated Benitez wants to test their resolve with a larger offer. Murphy is understood to be keen on making the move and a second bid from Newcastle would encourage the 22-year-old, who played for the Under-21 squad that reached the semi-finals of the European Championships in Poland last month, to push to leave Carrow Road. Murphy caught the eye of Benitez when Newcastle played Norwich in the Championship last season and he was also scouted by the club’s new head of recruitment, Steve Nickson, in Poland. Benitez wants the Newcastle hierarchy to start backing up the promises made to him earlier this summer with deeds and feels it is time for them to start flexing their financial muscle in the transfer market after weeks of haggling – and missing out - on deals. Newcastle are also continuing to monitor Adama Traore situation at Middlesbrough, although they believe their North-East neighbours have set an unrealistic asking price for the former Barcelona and Aston Villa winger. Boro are believed to have quoted a fee of more than £10m for a player they signed for a small fraction of that sum 12 months ago. The relationship between Benitez and Charnley has become increasingly strained this summer and Newcastle’s manager cannot understand why there has not been more success in recruitment given he was promised “every penny” of the extra income generated by promotion back to the Premier League by the club’s owner, Mike Ashley. Although Newcastle have turned Christian Atsu’s loan from Chelsea into a permanent move, their only other signing so far in this transfer window is the French centre-back, Florian Lejeune, who signed from Spanish club Eibar. However, even that deal took far longer that it should as the player had a release clause in his contract. The problem for Benitez is that the transfer market is highly inflated with some ridiculous prices being quoted and those above him at St James’ Park believe they will get better value for money later in the window. The presence of Justin Barnes, an abrasive lieutenant of Ashley, is also a complicating factor as he in charge of the club’s finances.
Rayvin 5220
That's a rather surprising thing to see. While I totally agree with him, Rafa 'demanding' things of Charnley doesn't paint a very good picture.

trooper 940
Shameful that Charnley, Ashley & co haven't the same vision for the club as Rafa. Minimum outlay maximum reward it's a business not a football club. Ashley will never change absolutley shameful

adios 717
The trouble is, @trooper, if we want to see seven players in for £100m that's £14m a player not even considering no-doubt-inflated wage demands. So if the going rate for that premiership proven centre-forward is £40m, wtf are they meant to do? Gambling on players from the continent seems like the only answer for at least 70% of incoming players.

Gayle was palaces top scorer in the premier league from the bench at the point when they signed Benteke. He'd barely started any games but scored nearly every game he appeared in. He came to us due to the modern fashion for one up front, he knew after Pardew spent millions on benteke he'd be second choice permanently. I think to describe him, in view of this and on the evidence of last season, as a "make do" is blatantly unfair.

ewerk 30602
That's a list of every player who scored over ten league goals last season. The only ones we could possibly hope to sign are Llorente and King and even then we wouldn't be the only ones in for them.
