Abortion shouldn’t be banned and nor will it be. It shouldn’t be celebrated either.

Getting strong incel vibes from this bloke.

Isn’t it ironic that the judiciary in America, land of the free, thinks the state should have a say over what a woman decides to do to her own body. And those who support it will be the same dickheads protesting against masks and vaccines and making the case for assault rifle ownership.

Oh absolutely, I'll let him continue for now though, I REALLY want to hear the explanation behind this "men can menstruate" statement.

It is literally the killing of an unborn child.

as for anti science… men can now menstruate and get pregnant so it can no longer be described as an attack on women.

No it isn't.

Pro-life aren't actually pro-life, they're religious ideologues who're imposing their particular brand of misunderstanding of religious text on an entire people. If Pro-Life were actually pro-life their voting patterns would represent that, they'd vote for gun reform, they'd vote for green energy, they'd vote for socialised healthcare, they'd vote against the death penalty, they'd vote for a whole host of issues that would save lives. But they don't, they vote for guns in schools, fracking, freedom to be ripped off by insurance companies and plug 'em in and fire 'em up Cletus!

Could women have the Placenta removed? It's their organ afterall.

Wouldn't being forced to carry, and birth a child of rape be seen as punishment for a crime you didn't commit?

Is being forced by the state to raise a child not forced labour?

Like I’ve said before I’d have more respect for people citing religious reasons if they actually appeared to be trying to live in a way that aligned with alleged teachings of Jesus. But they’re often advocates of the most rampant forms of capitalism, not to mention picking and choosing which bits of Leviticus etc. engender the most hatred / provides an excuse for their prejudices

I was reading a Jewish view from a rabbi which accounting for it being religious actually made a bit of sense - they believe life starts and the soul is enshrined at birth and consider the life to be preserved when there's a choice to be the woman's which I agree with from my atheistic moral compass.

I think the "conception" concept of Catholicism/Christianity is a bit out of date and very much arbitrarily chosen for political purposes although I can understand the queasiness around later/late abortions.

Why the fuck are religious views even considered in what is a medical procedure?

Do we consult the bible before setting a broken leg?
Check the koran before removing a rotten tooth?

It’s insane in 2022 that these nut jobs still hold power.

Definitely - on a personal note and affecting others more recently their interference in the euthanasia debate pisses me off too.

If end-of-life euthanasia was legal here, I would have 100% taken the option for my Dad to save him having to go through his last two weeks.

Religions, all of them, can opt out if they want, but fuck them for making the rest of us suffer to ease their bleeding hearts.

This is particularly apparent in the US, where your average American Christian appears to be both hateful and psychotic. I feel like the European equivalents are less Hellfire and Brimstone. US Christianity seems very much focused on the old testament, whereas in Europe it's more about the new - but given that the most important, fundamental message that Jesus set out in the New Testament was "Love each other as you love yourselves" (honourable mention to "let he who is without sin cast the first stone"), you really do have to wonder how Evangelical America is squaring a lot of this away.

Speaking of the European version, we've recently had this through our door, in the taxpayer-funded mayoral candidate overview leaflet.

I should be offended at the suggestion that I'm not safe to be allowed around kids, but I'm more amused by the fact that the candidate, the delightful Maureen Martin, sees fit to put this as one of her six priorities for Lewisham specifically. "Youth outreach, help for local businesses, tell everyone that the gays are wrong, stop fly-tipping..."

Yes, I should add that it's not like the European versions are "right", it's just that they're less likely to shoot you for disagreeing

Yeah the whole family thing is a deal for my mother too - she's actually very open minded on gay and trans rights and so on, and I don't actually think she does oppose marriage between anyone, but I've definitely heard her spout off about how it's a sacred bond between man and woman and the cornerstone of society. I'm anti-marriage full stop so I often get lectured on it.

She's clearly read the "How to present awful takes in modern times" handbook

Quote

Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Ms Martin defended the leaflet’s statements, claiming they were backed up by data and shared by locals. She said: “Of course it’s not bigoted. There are studies that have come out that say children brought up by same sex couples, it’s harmful to them. It’s about better outcomes for children.
"I have had contact from people who agree with what I'm saying. My campaign generally it’s to address the issues that Lewisham residents care about. Not everybody shares Mr Egan’s opinion. It’s a minority that shares his opinion and people are happy that someone is bold enough to say it.

"I’m a Christian. The Bible says natural marriage is between a man and a woman. If people choose to have that relationship, that’s their choice. As far as I’m concerned it’s the law and people can choose to engage in gay marriage if they choose to. It wouldn’t be my choice. If they want to do so, they are free to do so."

"There are studies"

"I have had contact"

'I'm in the majority the other fella isn't and people agree with me'

'Homosexuality is a choice'

My favourite is "The Bible says", like it's gospel.

I am very confused by that statement even at a general level. So she's saying that gay marriage is legal and people can do it if they want, but she doesn't agree with it. Ok. So what is the basis of its inclusion in her political platform? If she isn't campaigning against it, or raising awareness for some misguided fund, what has she even brought it up for? One assumes it's just virtue signalling for the right wing crazies.
