I struggle to think of a worse midfielder I've ever seen for us (not counting Fumaca who I don't think was even a professional footballer).  Maybe Pat Heard.

Off the top of my head,

McClen, Brady, Bassedas, Geremi, Dumas, Faye, Hamilton, Pancrate, Georgiadis, Ireland... does Muto count?

Muto being an (alleged) striker and Dumas being a defender don't count (I actually think Dumas ended up playing a couple of decent games for us).   McClen, Brady, Hamilton, Pancrate, Georgiadis and Ireland don't count as they barely played a game for us (same as Terry Wilson who would have undoubtedly come into consideration with Fumaca if I was considering just anyone who played a game or two).  Even Bassedas is pushing it.  Faye definitely deserves consideration as he was fucking terrible.  Geremi, I wouldn't personally rate him as poorly.  Maybe that's because I've seen that he was a good player before he ended up here and if I were to objectively judge him on his time here, he'd probably have to be considered.

I'm no doubt being harsh on him but I think it's the fact that Hayden played 171 games for us (which will be more than all of these other players combined I would think), and that people somehow thought he was a consistent 7 out of 10 that makes me hate him so much.  His best days weren't a 7 out 10, he was a consistent 5.

I’d forgotten about him but Faye was fucking terrible. He couldn’t pass a ball 5 yards. How he it made it as a an elite pro I’ll never know.

Hayden was fine for the Championship campaign. I'd put him at the same level as Dummett.

Dummett was a far more useful player than Hayden.  And for a long time I couldn't stand Dummett but he eventually proved himself useful even in the top flight.  Hayden never did over any kind of consistent period.

Guthrie was okay for me.  Not very athletic but technically decent and was fine in the championship.

Aye, the season in the championship he was good - but it was clearly his level - He scored a few thundercunts for us that season from memory.

The bar was so low for Hayden that just being a good lad with a good attitude who was prepared to get stuck in gave him some brownie points particularly in the championship. Put it this way, swap the shirts on him with a Sunderland shirt and they'd be calling him a future England captain but that's just their way. Anyway, the fault of him being still on our books lies 100% with the Ashley regime.

Dumas counts as a midfielder because that’s where he played. He was a continental style sweeper in France but Gullit played him instead of Rob Lee. He also looked like a bin man. Almost as much as Neville Southall
