gpirlo68 0
'Know a few Newcastle fans and I believe they only have one recognised centre back in Lascelles. Coloccini and Taylor have left so they just need numbers. If they have ambitions of calling themselves a premier league club then Hanley is just a body for short term. Newcastle, the city and nightlife, will ruin him. He's always in the emporium apparently so goodness knows what the bigg market will do to him. He'll spend as much time in jesmond on Osborne road as the training ground. Most bars have happy "hour" machines that range from free drinks, drinks for a £1, half price, 2 4 1, or full price. I'd wager he'll semi pro on those.' Edited July 9, 2016 by gpirlo68

gpirlo68 0
Grant Hanley will travel to Tyneside for a medical today after they agreed a fee of £5.5m with Blackburn for the Scottish international. Keith Downie- Sky sports news

David Kelly 1245
I'm pretty happy with this signing if it goes through as expected. I still expect Mbemba and Lacelles to be our first choice pairing but clearly we need more in that position. You can't go through a championship season with just two centrebacks. He seems to be pretty well respected at Blackburn especially in the last couple of seasons when he's apparently sorted is life out a bit more. On the few times I've seen him he's not looked massively cultured but looks like the sort of defender who wins a lot of challenges, particularly in the air, so you notice him. That's something that has been lacking in our defence for a few years. I think these three will play a lot this season. Ok he may not be an exciting signing to play in the premier league but I think he will be a good signing to help get us there and hopefully he can develop under Rafa. Think we need another in as back up too. Hayden can apparently play there and we no Dummett can do a short term job there but I think we need a specialist for that position. I think I read earlier that we used 6 or 7 players in that position in the last promotion season. We'll be well short if we need that many again. You'd assume if Citeh are buying him and loaning him out to a lower division team, they'd be expecting him to play regularly.

Ayatollah Hermione 13865
I can see this being similar to Williamson in that, he'll do a good job in the Championship and (hopefully), the first PL season but should be moved on as improvements come in, which we never did with Williamson obviously. There's every chance that he develops into a shit hot centre half under Rafa as well, of course
Lackie92 1
Blackburn fans seem to like him... And what have Blackburn amounted to since relegation? I've seen him plenty of times for Scotland to see he's nothing better than a Championship defender.

I've seen him plenty of times for Scotland to see he's nothing better than a Championship defender. The consensus from what I've heard is that he (and the rest of the defenders) have been poor for Scotland I think he's a high end championship player, who will do well for us. Good addition to the squad

We should have been constinuously developing our squad so that players who couldn't improve were replaced with ones of a higher standard. What we actually did was keep players who we couldn't sell on for a profit or didn't kick demand at transfer regardless of how that effected the team. By all accounts he's a leader though, which is something Williamson was definitely lacking. He shit himself when he had to play at home. Good addition to the squad I would agree to an extent... not sure he merits £5.5m however... As we're in the Championship that's ok then. Perhaps so but £5.5m on a player who will get found out in the Premiership?
Howay 12496
£5.5m isn't a whole lot in the transfer market now, Jonjo Shelvey cost us £12m ffs. The lad is clearly a steady championship player and he's only 24, it's a fine bit of business and who knows he might make the step up to the PL he's still young enough to improve especially under a defensive manager like Rafa. David Kelly 1245
£5.5m gets you next to nothing in the premier league these days so I think it's a fairly low risk signing even if he turns out only to be of use to us for this season. If that's the case we'd probably get our money back selling him to someone else looking for promotion.

StoneColdStephenIreland 74
Good to see that Rafa has straight away identified the defence as something that needs improving. Everyone could see that it needed to be done over the past few year apart from those at the club and CT.
