So many Pope questions, so little time. I reckon if they introduced one new rule- “ anyone can ask to be pope, but if you aren’t chosen you die”, it would speed things up and let them burn their little bonfire way sooner than now. In 1292, after a conclave lasting two years without choosing a pope, a Benedictine hermit called Pietro de Morrone sent a letter saying if a pope was not chosen quickly, divine retribution would fall on them. The leader of the Conclave immediately declared Pietro as the Pope, and the conclave ratified the choice with no exceptions. Upon being told of his new job, Pietro ran away and hid, refusing to take up his new role. Eventually he was persuaded to accept and became Clementine V , and his first and only papal decree, immediately upon taking up the role, was to introduce the right of resignation for popes.
