It’s a shame but, as someone who plays guitar and drums, I don’t think I’ve been in it for about a decade and that sort of sums it up. Not sure what is even in Central Arcade now but IIRC, it’s part of the Rueben portfolio so let’s hope a building that fantastic doesn’t go to waste

Same. As sad as it is that it's gone cos it's a bit of an institution, I never bought a guitar from there. Books, CDs when I was younger, and maybe the odd pedal 20 years ago.

They did too many things, not well enough.

It’ll end up as another “Destination “ bar full of wankers, I expect.

Yeah, same here as well. Bought 2 guitars there and a few pedals back in the day as my mate worked there but haven't been in in donkeys. Still got one of the guitars... Might dig it out for a bit strum.

Horrible what is happening to retail in this country, especially independent shops like this. I would bulldoze oot shopping centres, especially the Metro centre. There just isn't the retail capacity to support both Newcastle city centre and that American mall shite. Build houses there, consolidate Newcastle. Fix Eldon square and. Northumberland street which is a disgrace. Fix the Metro and get more working interchanges and park and rides which actually worked before the Tories destroyed it all with bus deregulation. Get office workers into the city.

Some of this is happening but not the Metro centre bit. God I hate that place. As things stand I can see John Lewis and/or Fenwick going and then what's left?

I have said for well over a decade that the OOT shopping should be fucked off.  It creates traffic and they're fucking soulless places.

I went into Leeds centre yesterday for the first time since April. Fuck me, it was depressing. It was heaving with the Black Friday deals but the're was so many shops closing down.  Like you say Renton, all independent ones. Homeless was a lot more noticeable than what I usually see and it's just full of fucking deadheads and chavs.  I have a couple of old down jackets I am going to take to a homeless charity I support this afternoon.  The homeless situation just really hits me :(

You can do all that and I'll still buy stuff online. Also fuck "get office workers into the city".

Why not? Benton Park View is relocating to Pilgrim Street. That will leave the land for prime residential development and give the city centre a much needed boost. Got to be a good thing.

Speaking personally, I'd much rather work in Newcastle, travelling by metro, than have to drive to some soulless shit hole business park out of town.

If you mean instead of working from home, then no, I'm not advocating this but it's obvious that for most white collar workers hybrid working is the future. I don't believe purely wfh is good for your mental health.

As for online shopping, this also should be hybrid with buying online for some stuff but using physical shops for others, like clothes .

Otherwise, what's the future here? Are you happy for our city centres just to become ghost towns like so many US CBDs have become? Surely what is needed is for urban centres to offer a mix of residence, work, retail and leisure and for the out of town shite to be done away with. It offers nothing.

Metro Centre is just food and shite like Mini Golf and the Namco arcade. Not sure what they’ve got planned but I can see it becoming some family day out nonsense. The potential of Metro Land brought full

If Carliol House is anything to go by then we are in trouble

Isn't the HMRC moving into that?

Aye, but this is what's left of the original building

They also fucked up the old Odeon.  It was de-listed and they stripped anything of value from inside before the decision could be appealed iirc

I wouldn't have any faith in them looking after the Windows arcade

My dad worked in the original Carliol House for years and years. No shortage of anecdotes, as you might imagine - like how one of the NEEB/Northern Electric bigwigs didn't want to get wet going from his office to his car so they literally built a footbridge from the back of Carliol into the Dex car park for him.

Possible it’ll never be established but ‘after an evening with friends’ did immediately make me think about whether they were in a fit state to be driving. What a fucking horrible way to go like

Aye, rural drink driving is fucking rampant.

There are certain euphemisms which news outlets use when they don’t want to be sued to hell, and “spent an evening with friends” is one.
