Jill 0
Hamburg is lively. Highly recommend trying to get tickets to watch St Pauli We're going for Hamburg v Hertha BSC. I think the ice hockey team is playing on the Friday night too so probably go along to that as well. Sport abroad is great fun.

Meenzer 15467
If you're not just after sunshine, I'd piece together a rail trip involving some combination of Nuremberg, Prague, Wrocław, Dresden and Leipzig with a night or two in each. Cheap flights to/from either end, plenty of options in terms of culture and architecture and exploring, cuisines based almost entirely on beer and meat. If you are just after sunshine, Canary Islands and a pile of books. That'll do.

It'll be almost permanently night and the weather tends to be stormy so little chance of seeing the Aurora, if present. It doesn't actually even snow much in Iceland as a rule either so might not fell especially christmassy. Chances are you will be stuck in an horrendously overpriced bar contemplating whether to try the local delicacies of roast puffin and fermented whale blubber. I liked it though. Renton 21451
Haha, I though it was the best chance to see the northern lights? when would you suggest? I wouldn't go to Iceland if your main reason is to see the northern lights, because unless you stay there for a long time and are staying outside Reykjavik, you're likely going to be disappointed. Also the peak of solar activity has passed iirc. I'm not a fan of freezing cold perma-darkness though, find it suicidally depressing in fact. If I go back to Iceland, it will be in summer when the sun doesn't set.

Ayatollah Hermione 13842
If the price is right. anyway, few Munich questions since we're finally booked. Stayed in the dodgy bit since it was cheaper and it means we've got a bit extra to go further afield (maybe see Augsburg/Dortmund and Dachau) but just a few things: Any canny beer gardens/pubs that aren't the Hofbrauhaus or the English Gardens? Anyone know of any canny places to have some "authentic" Bavarian scran? Is the Allianz Arena tour and subsequent museum any good? We're all football fans so I imagine it'll be worth it like and them actually being successful means it's got to be better than ours.

The stadium is very impressive but the dressing rooms, press rooms etc were nothing special. You don't get to go pitch side/have your photo taken on the bench etc, which you can do on some other stadium tours. The museum within the stadium is good, the number of trophies is amazing. No Intertoto framed certificate like us though so fuck them. It might be better during the season as the pitch was being re-seeded when we were there. It's also a bit of a mission to get there. It did keep us out of the pub for a few hours though which was much needed. However, it would be a belting stadium to watch a match at as it is surprisingly compact given its capacity. Bayern are away from home on the weekend we go or else we'd be going to a game instead. Sounds like we'll be better off just going to the museum. Dr Gloom 21868
I went in December when I was about 21 on the way to Prague. Only 24 hours like but I enjoyed it. Very festive that time of year. My lasting memory of the place is spewing in the bogs in the train station just before setting off for Prague the next day after one too many of those supersize beers with schnapps chasers

Ask @@Meenzer he can confirm. I've certainly never felt particularly at home there or wanted to stay for any longer, but then I'm very much a northern type when it comes to Germany too. So I'm sure there is fun to be had in Munich, I just find it quite... artificial, I suppose? As for the esteemed Ayatollah's questions: There's loads of smaller but less appallingly busy beer halls around, you won't have to look too hard - every local brewery seems to have one or two, and there are tons of local breweries, so just look for a Biergarten sign outside. And! Most of them will do exactly the kind of authentic Bavarian scran you're after too, so no need to venture any further afield. Plus the one advantage of it being a touristy city is they all have menus in English... (For what it's worth, from my very loose memory I've been to the Augustiner Bräustuben, the Augustiner Keller and Paulaner am Nockherberg before, but they're all much of a muchness in terms of what they do - surely the only reason for my vague recollections - so I can't really recommend any one over the others. ) And get yourself to the Viktualienmarkt for lunch/daytime food, it's a foodie market with lots of stalls selling stuff from the vaguely posh to the "slabs of pig in a bun" type of thing you'll be needing to mop up a brutal hangover. And obviously they'll happily provide you with the hair of the dog too.

I'm not even going to try and spell the name of that market but it's pretty close to where we're staying so I'll make sure to head there. I don't want to just exist on four days worth of meat and potato salad so that'll help. Having spoke to a few people, I'm glad you can basically stumble from one bar to the next which, by about 10 most nights, is the only thing you're really bothered about. Last question, do I risk going to Dachau when I'm delicate or will I be escorted away in fits of sobs?
