Once all the older, sort of 65+ lot, got on Facebook and Twitter and started lapping up all the conspiracy shit and Russian propaganda. It’s had a big hand in stuff like what’s just happened, what happened 8 years ago, Brexit, Johnson winning his ‘landslide’, the rise of fascism and Reform. It’s not all of them by any means or just them. But loads of that generation are completely down the rabbit hole. And they’re never coming back.

This deserves a bigger platform than this thread, the spread of disinformation and anti-science. It's one thing people using this as a political tool, but if he is to believed, Trump is about to put a prominent anti-vaccer in charge of agencies at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), including the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

https://www.science.org/content/article/researchers-state-panic-after-robert-f-kennedy-jr-says-trump-will-hand-him-health

Now, going back to people thinking I'm a fanny or whatever for being highly concerned of what today represents, I work for a healthcare consultancy based in the US, and yes, I am scared. As should all users of healthcare in the US and further afield if you trust fruitcakes RFK. There are only two key regulatory blocks for healthcare interventions in the World, the FDA (and related agencies) and the EMA (forget the MHRA, we forfeited our place at the table with Brexit).

Hopefully Trump won't go down this route.  But iirc fluoridation of water in the US is something he wants to stop immediately.

Social Media is absolutely evil but your latter point is bollocks, of my contemporaries (socially and formerly workwise) I am the only one who is "online active" must be some other old people you are thinking about.

It's not one generation, it's malignant, manufactured and bespoke messaging across them all.

No grandpa, it's you lot.

There’s lads I work and have worked with, who are younger than me, that are totally taken in by whatever they read on Facebook and Twitter. Due to it constantly pumping it into their feed if they’ve so much as engaged with it once. People saying it’s just older racists are living in fantasy land

This is akin to victim blaming. Blame the woman for being weak and not the rapist. It's not the Democrats who are to blame here and their educated urban voters. It's the fascist, mysognystic, racist Republican Party led by Trump and voted for by gullible rural Hill Billies.

This is complete nonsense. When Corbyn lost to Johnson, i seem to recall him being blamed for that here.

Why are the Democrats lifted up to some level where their actions and choices don't matter, they're just helpless little centrist victims?

I don't even think this is about her being a woman, neither side made any fuss about that at all really. I think once the demographic data comes out we'll have a clearer view on things but I watched a lot of content overnight from actual Democrat politicians chastising their party over disinterest in the groups they have "lost". Minorities, men, people of colour in general.

It's a huge, well funded, corporation friendly, media supported political party. It is not a victim, it's a fucking joke. And it's been in power for the past 4 years, it had the ability to make a difference, it just chose not to. Biden would have been annihilated if he ran too.

4 more years because of their hubris...

We need to wake the fuck up to this.

Lies are the new truth, it's patently inexorable and I for one am past caring, because THERE IS FUCK ALL I CAN DO ABOUT IT.

Well I am sure there is some hypocrisy on my part which frankly I can't help such is my dislike of Corbyn. I've never blamed Corbyn for what Johnson did in power but you're right, I apportion blame in him giving him such a huge landslide. That said, I think I have told you why I dislike Corbyn plenty of times in the past, and why I blame him for neutering the LAbour party, some which you agreed, some which you didn't, so let's not rehearse that again, it's ancient history now.

I'm genuinely curious as to what people (including you) think Harris got wrong in the campaign. She was civil, she played by the rules, her opponent did not, was this her downfall? Was it the economic legacy she left alongside Biden, with the US economcy being described as a miracle by economists? Was it Jo Biden's inflation reduction act which will powerhouse the US over the next decade (the US economy has increased 50% compared with the EU over the last few years, their median wage is now staggering compared with ours). Was it the ineveitable inflation following covid they failed to adequately explain? Was it immigration? Was she too left wing (dubbed a communist) or not right wing enough?

Or was it the due to the toxic nature of the disinformation spewed out by Trump and his allies which was gratefully lapped up by a fundamentally mysogynistic and racist nation of proto-fascists and religious authoritarian loving nut jobs? Cos that is what I think is the main reason. And I don't see how she could have changed that, and I don't see anyway the democrats can change it now as they have basically lost their democracy in that country.

So yes, I blame Trump, not Harris.

You know you should care though? You've decided to give up caring. I understand that, but don't really respect that viewpoint, especially because you have kids.

Yeah, I agree with that although my point earlier ties in with Meenzer’s about the people who actually bother voting.

And he (Singular now) will do what I did, get through life with the support, if needed, of his parents. Caring won't fix it, outside of caring fixing it is not within my capabilities, so I'll just sit back and watch, thanks.

For non history making folks you're only three generations from being utterly forgotten, who knows much about their great grandparents even less for great great grandparents.

What I care about/think is best is obviously a minority view in the wider population, so I'll make do and mend as best I can for my own piece of mind.

If RFKjr gets measles and Polio to ravage the US, more power to him I say, it's a lost cause which only catastrophe can probably reverse.

Seriously, this puts the fear of fucking god into me.

I've just bought my (final?) house and feeling content that I've met my aims and can calm the fuck down now and work for a lifestyle rather than live for work and then there's going to be a fuckin global war or some shit.

This will do to the US international reputation, what Boris did to the UK.

OR

Everyone will shit themselves and not want to poke the monkey.

I'm hoping for the second so I can enjoy my end days sinking pints and pies and watching us win the champions league

Apologies for using the plural there TP, that was clumsy and it puts things into perspective of this somewhat esoteric shit vs. real every day shit. But I still think we have to care, otherwise all normality is lost. I'm not going to stop caring about lying, it a scourge on society and will lead to its death. I fully understand it doesn't mean I will change anythhing or have any legacy. Nobody does in the end, the Universe doesn't care.

Anyway, that's enough from here now for a while, had my therapy. But like it or not, we are going to get this gurning orange cretin on our screens daily for many more years. This thread will not die, Gemmill will not stop posting. The few dormant years when this thread ws quiet was a relief.

Trump’s messaging is very seductive. It’s big on promises, light on detail.

I will end inflation! (No explanation how)

I will make America a global manufacturing power again (what, through tariffs?)

I will secure our borders and deport illegals! (racists lap this stuff up)

Perhaps the Dems could have played this game too. The economy was definitely Kamala’s weak spot. She had few answers, perhaps she needed more slogans
