Brought Zelensky all the way to the oval office to abuse him and his country in front of the global press, parroted Putin's words in front of that same global press but NOW he decides to do something. As you say his actions since last week have cost countless innocent Ukrainian lives so it seems highly unlikely that he'll take any action against Russia. Unless of course Putin has given him permission to as a way of saving face. It might also be that a united Europe ready to work and fight together has made him drop his bait a bit. One of the most plausible is that he's treating all this as a gameshow and still thinks viewing figures are the key metric to his presidency. Even after last Friday's debacle, he made the comment that he bet those watching on TV loved it iirc. I get pathological narcissism is a thing.
