They had a full inquiry in the early 2020s though mate. We can see the thing, we can read it. Labour have committed to carry out its recommendations and have deemed it a waste of public money to carry out another inquiry for the hell of it.

The Tories failed, for some reason, to commit to any of the recommendations. Labour came in and immediately said they would. All this noise is a complete nonsense by right wing grifters trying to drag up the whole issue because Elon Musk is completely ignorant of all this and created a shit storm about it again. This first came out in 2012 for fuck sake. We know about it. Nothing was exposed by youtubers, nothing was covered up, all that has happened here is people who weren't paying attention a decade ago have been whipped into an outrage by manipulators.

Absolutely bang on.

The woman that led the inquiry says that what is not needed is another inquiry, but a govt that takes seriously the recommendations of the first one, and implements them.

Stotty, you're being led down rabbit holes by conspiracy nut jobs.

There was one and it made recommendations which previous government ignored.

See that’s the problem right there. People aren’t informed. Well that in itself isn’t the problem, much of the country isn’t well informed. When it becomes an issue is when these same people then form strong views without doing the tiniest bit of research as to whether their opinions are supported by any evidence.

One other thought on all this - the EU needs to federalise. We cannot waste any more time on the USA, the only reason any of us even care about this is because of how it fucks up the wider Western civilisation. I mean that was our civilisation to start with anyway, and the US can't be trusted to lead it anymore. Europe urgently needs to grow a pair. And we need to get the fuck back into it. I firmly believe a federal EU would be approximately as strong as the US anyway.

I still think this, and honestly maybe for all the pain we're currently feeling about Trump, he's long term doing us a big favour here. His legacy will be the diminishment of the US as a global power, but in fairness to him, that was always coming either way. He's speeding it up but we were always going to get there. He is also right that Europe has relied on the US for too long. He's wrong about the fact that this relationship is one way, but he can find that out further down the line - for the here and now, we need the EU to come together properly and there is still time and will for it to do so. I don't think US antics that we're seeing right now will be polling well across the EU, and the common enemy in Russia could well bring us to a position of unity - sad but true, people need enemies to unite around.

Yeah it's not on a timeline we wanted, and yeah it feels kinda scary at this moment in time, but this might well be the kick in the ass all of Europe needs to stop being so fucking petty with each other, and start coming together more. We shouldn't be relying on anyone, especially not the US. Trump and his administration are humiliating our entire continent and our people this week, and it's by design. We have to accept this because of things like Brexit actively weakening our alliance, but also because our politicians - yes including the 'good ones' have indeed hid behind America for many years. That is over, and it is not a bad thing. The EU can become everything America should have been, and now it finally has an impetus to do so.

Aye. Short term uncertainty, and it's jarring to see the US behaving like this, but if it means Europe sorts its shit out and stops relying on the US, then good.

Fuck the yanks. We cannot be hostage to their electorate every 4 years.

Interesting you mention federalism. Listening to Rory Stewart today on TRIP, he was saying that because the US is essentially federal in structure, he expects Trump's antics to cause chaos at the State level, with individual states refusing to pass his reforms. And of course Trump will have destroyed the legislative and judicial guard rails, well that works both ways. Basically he said everyone has the assumption that the authoritarian Trump will do what he wants, but in reality he could be taken down in a civil war.

I mean Stewart has been very wrong before, not least about the US election, but I respect his opinions.

I agree there could be long term benefits for Europe if it survives this period. We must never rely on the US again. Kick them the fuck out of our continent. But what worries me is the contagion they have caused, the rise of popularism. Things are looking very dicey in Germany, France, and the UK. Not to mention Italy, Hungary. I desperately want things to get better but it never seems to.

I sort of hope that the populists have blown their load to soon here. Europe is teetering but it hasn't fallen over yet. This anti-European sentiment from the US could rally people against popularism - I mean what are our homegrown equivalents going to offer if the US has made clear that they're not interested? There's nothing there for them to point to, US wants isolationism. It's us on our own, led by people like Farage, or a united Europe against an increasingly hostile Russia.

I sincerely hope they start ramping up messaging about this.

Kendzior suggests that the “red state/blue state” thing is deliberate. That’s how things will be divided when battle comes down…

The blue states all but pay for/finance the red states I believe, could be messy for MAGA.

An Florida is full of crinklies dependent on Medicare.

So he slashes welfare and gives tax breaks? So as you say, that benefits blue states and disbenefits red ones. So he hits his base. Interesting.

Have just seen Nancy Pelosi come out and say that in 6 months when the campaigning starts again, the democrats are going to come out in force

Steve Bannon is currently celebrating, his 'flooding the zone' plan is working perfectly. There'll be nothing left in 6 months Nancy... might I suggest you hand leadership of the party over to someone about 30 years younger?

That was what Labour did though. You stay quiet and let your enemy make their own mistakes. Then you swoop in, win power and have absolutely no plan what to do with it.

Hopefully get our collective fingers out of our asses.

It worries me that Macron is the last man standing in terms of 'competent and arguably strong leadership' within the EU though. Especially since he almost certainly loses his Presidency next time out.

Musk quote tweeted that Trump one with nothing but 14 images of the US flag. He tweeted it at 14:14.

Number 14 is significant in white supremacist circles (like 88 is to Neo-Nazis) as it represents what are called the the 14 words slogans:

Primary slogan - We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children,

Followed by a secondary 14 - Because the beauty of the white Aryan woman must not perish from the earth.

It's no coincidence, it was a message.
