You stream them rather than download them. Plex is a piece of piss to set up btw, you just need your folder structures set up right and it does all the work for you. Mightnt have worked as well a few years ago though, I suppose.

I remember mucking about with Plex about 6 or 7 years ago and then I realized that faffing on for hours to have a good looking interactive library for my media was pointless.

 

What is this now? It sounds like a bit more than just a media centre? Can you actually use the interface to download tv programs and films? That was the thing I never understood how to do with Plex and why I gave up. Apparently you could set it up to automatically download new episodes etc. Is that what this is?

This is basically streaming any media on the Internet. Films / TV / Box Sets / music concerts / porn etc.

 

Rather than download you just click on what you want to watch and it plays. Covers stuff going back years (Hong Kong phuey) to stuff at the cinemas.

 

Being a bit sad I quite like the web cams from around the world. (Or as I tell the kids, the modern way to have a holiday without the hassle of travelling).

I've actually got a fire stick which I hardly ever use because the content is so limited or expensive. So giving this a try seems a no brainer, although I'm shocked I'm less IT literate than CT.

 

How does this work in a legal sense though? Can I expect a knock on the door?

If it's to stream, how do you find the streamers? Are there sites for Plex / Kobi that list them? Also I remember the folder structure thing from the last time i used Plex but if it's used to access streaming then why does the folder structure matter? Because it's still meant to be a media center for actual data you have stored on your machine?

No Plex is something different, sorry I've confused matters - plex is just a front end for your locally held media.

 

Kodi has what amounts to apps which you open and can then search for movies or TV shows. When you find what you're after, you just select a source and it'll play. You can subscribe to TV shows so that you don't have to go in and search - they'll just be there each time a new episode airs.

Once you've installed Kodi, you then very simply install that build (the beast 1.4) and all the links are set up automatically EXACTLY like in that video above your post.

 

The build is totally adjustable so in a weeks time if you wanted to add to it or remove channels it's dead easy.

Can't believe so many people are behind CT on this mind

There's no difference in setup fundamentally between xbmc & kodi or raspberry pi & firestick other than since gemmill did a detailed guide 2 years back it's now become so easy even CT can do it.

It's the addons that change. Genesis, phoenix and vdubt piss on 1channel and icefilms and that which used to be the main ones.

Advise people follow Ant's advice. Installing something called the "beast" tells you it's going to be big, needlessly so for those that only want TV, films and sports from a tiny firestick.

I'm behind the curve like most normal people you massive bunch of nerds Nice nerds obviously, but most normal people don't have a clue about this stuff. Its obviously not niche anymore but i've never met anyone who speaks of Kodi or XBMC.

 

I will do this soon but it will probably be next year before i get round to it.

Can't remember how bad the Pi was, but firestick still frustrates. Just browsing through films and TV does become a chore waiting for a new screen to load, but it's not been bad enough to stop me using it so far, especially for the saturday football which is quality once you find the game you want.

 

Other thing you can do is cast your whole PC screen to a chromecast. I only have a work laptop so it's a pain for me to go into the other room and cast from my desktop pc, but with a laptop on your knee on the sofa it would be much better I guess.
