It's a shame because Anita would be a much better player if he wasn't so tiny. Put him inside Sissoko's body and you'd have a decent defensive monster.

I dont think its just that. What else is there to his game other than stringing 3 tiny passes together? You've got to have more at this level. Same goes for Colback.

Anita reads the game well, is competent technically and gives a shit. Put that inside a bigger frame and he'd be a decent defensive midfielder.

Colback is a walking yellow card, handy to have when you need someone to annoy the opposition, but not great at maintaining a rhythm to the game. We need someone to be a pivot on the pitch, if that's PErez or de Jong, then that's grand, but it'd be better if it was someone central imo.

Yep, but do you think it's likely we'll go on the same run under McClaren as we did under Carver?

This year we've played 4 of last season's top 8. The first 5 games of 14/15 we'd only played 2 of the top 8. Neither were easy starts but this season has been much tougher.

tough start, but i don't think i expected we would be as shit as we have.

the most alarming thing about mcclaren so far is he hasn't changed things up. we keep starting the same formation and players, despite creating fuck all since the first game.

he's got to go more attacking next game, or people are going to start losing faith in him.

Aye. My Auntie would also have been a great Uncle if she'd only had a cock.

You mean Pardew I think so

No, I'm saying that we had the same shit start last year, but managed to survive in spite of Carver taking NEwcastle United on the worst run in it's history. Yet people are wetting the bed already.

We haven't been shit though. We've been decent at home against Arsenal (despite losing a man early doors to a harsh red), good at Old Trafford and good against Southampton. We were average against Swansea, dominant against a poor cup opposition and fucking terrible last night. Lets not rewrite history just because we've a bad day at the office. Also, when you say "people" you mean you, right?

The 2nd from right column shows the comparison between where the team finished, vs where their opposition finished. So, on average, our opposition finished 8 places higher than us in the league, whereas Southampton finished 8.6 positions higher than those they've faced. They've had a poor start to the season, ours isn't a surprise.

In short, we've had a very, very hard start to the league so can everybody just calm the fuck down. :cuppa:

Bournemouth and Leicester have both gone to West Ham and won.

Watford and West Brom both took a point from Southampton at home.

Watford and Sunderland took 4 points off Swansea between them.

All well and good saying we had tough games but when our competitoirs have the same games they've walked away with as many or more points from them.

I don't think anyone is saying that the points return is acceptable but we're only five games in, after a tough start, and while it hasn't been great there's no need to panic just yet. It'll take more than five games for McClaren to get us into shape and to see what works and what doesn't. Saturday will tell us more about whether he has learnt anything from last night.

Everton have had a harder first 5 than us. You don't just throw your hands in the air and accept being bottom. How do we expect to improve if we aren't expecting to take more than 1 point off West Ham, Southampton and Swansea?

Everton have faced better opposition than us, but also are a better side than us.

I'm not throwing my hands in the air and accepting it, I'm saying we've played well in the majority of our games and the first properly bad day at the office shouldn't be cause for a collective panic.

It's a long old season and given we're not challenging for the title it's likely we'll have as many bad spells as good. The fixture list computer hasn't been kind to us and key players haven't played well, I think we've a way to go before we're relegation candidates.

That's fair enough but we've spent £50 million on players so you like to think that should counter act that. Next up Watford then Chelsea,Man City, Norwich & then the Makems there's no let up.

Swansea was just as shite as last night. And saying Everton are better is exactly what is disappointing. We're supposed to be aiming to finish above them.

I don't think anyone's panicking really. There's no-one saying sack McClaren or owt daft, I think we all assume we'll put some wins together soon and the fact that the likes of Leicester, Bournemouth, Norwich and the Mackems have had some of the easiest starts makes people as relaxed as they were at the end of December that we aren't relegation candidates ;)

Still, after the big spending summer it's daft to imagine people won't be disappointed, no matter what the fixture computer threw up. Crystal Palace, Everton, West Brom and Watford have all had fixtures as tough as us really. They've managed to wring more points out of them than we have. It suggests the top half optimism needs to be tempered towards another lower mid-table write off of a season Ashley has consistently delivered, one relegation and one Euro qulification aside.
