Howay 12496
http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/39015629 I hoped that we would one day get to read an article like this when we both went down and were told by all the pundits about how Villa would push us hard etc. It even has some brilliantly deluded quotes from Dean Saunders talking about how if placing was down to the size of club alone Villa would be top 6 Â (also includes the quote "Villa are bigger than Chelsea, Manchester City, Tottenham and Everton."). Â Magic article. It's also fantastic how poorly their fans have taken the craic from toon fans and are acting like when they laughed at us going down (unprovoked btw) it was all a big joke and we should have saw the funny side of it too, if fortunes were currently reversed those meek acting pricks would still be shitting on us so I'm happy for toon fans to keep the boot well on the throat of this utter boring hovel of a club. Â It is of course also quality that Clark has been our best CB and they were chuffed with 5m for him while pissing themselves, meanwhile their defence has been an utter shambles. Even based on historical success it's a ridiculous argument, they won the European Cup in 81 but they'll have fans who are middle aged too young to remember that. Of their 7 league titles, only one is after the War (that's the First World War). And they haven't won anything at all for over 20 years. Chelsea have won about 15 major trophies (more if you include Charity Shields and the Uefa Super Cup) since they last won a trophy. Edit: Not to mention the fact they've won more trophies overall too. Edited March 2, 2017 by Alex

Alex 35100
Aye, just like Real Madrid. I realise you're taking the piss but it's become the biggest load of bullshit in English football folklore that stability breeds success. It's the other way round but it's all predicated on one set of circumstances and a unique manager* at a massive club, i.e. Ferguson at Man Utd. The stability breeds success line is symptomatic of the absolutely shit and lazy levels of analysis amongst far too many journalists and pundits when it comes to English football. Which brings us back nicely to Paul Merson. Â Â *I know all managers are unique
Dr Gloom 21959
stability doesn't always breed success, it's true. wasn't pardew the longest serving manager in the league while he was with us?  but frequently changing managers when you don't have the cash to spend of a real madrid isn't the smartest move either tbf. all coaches need a bit of time to implement their ideas and get the players they want in.

ewerk 30645
That article about Aston Villa again makes the point that they've gotten a DoF in place now and how he will bring stability to the transfer policy and playing style which I find completely ridiculous. What exactly makes the DoF any more likely than the manager to choose the right players and style? It seems like the role is designed to have stability for stability's sake. rogerbarton 24
I kind of hope they sack Steve Bruce tbh. He's a decent bet to get them in shape in the summer and have them gunning for promotion next year. I just think they've built up such a culture of losing there - over many years, as referenced in the article - that it needs a total overhaul from top to bottom. Â I wonder this sometimes too - the only thing I can think is that having one allows for consistency through the club, and makes the manager more expendable. If results take a poor turn and the fans are crowing, the manager can be pushed out without destabilising the club's long term vision - a new manager can be brought in who aligns more closely with that vision than might have been secured otherwise. Â That's really all I can think of.
The Fish 10866
I like the concept of a Director of Football; someone who can mould long time strategies in the boardroom, in the transfer market, in the stands, in the community and on the training grounds. Unburdened by short term views of results on the pitch and who can plan for the next step, a good example of that is Southampton replacing Adkins, who did well to get them into the Premier League, with Pochettino who kicked them on a level.  Aston Villa should stick with Bruce, as he's likely to get them up soon, but already be planning for life in the Premier League. David Kelly 1245
The concept of a director of football is interesting. Â As others have mentioned I can see the possible advantages with it in putting in place a long term strategy and recruiting players based on that. Â The problem with it is, it leaves the manager as little more than a coach and most good managers won't accept that unless they are going to a club like Barcelona or Madrid. Â When we tried it we ended up with shite like Pardew. The argument for changing a manager or continuity all depends on the manager. Â When you have someone like Ferguson or Wenger it's much more worth giving them time than it is if your manager is Pardew who (as well as being generally shite) showed no signs of developing any kind legacy into the club. Last time I was visiting home I got into an argument with a Liverpool glory hunter I know and he was adamant Chelsea simply aren't a big club because it's all bought and they won a lot of them recently, it's this sort of re-drawing of what counts to suit their argument that makes it so funny tbh. Saunders can scream on that Villa are a 'bigger clooob' than Spurs but nobody cares, look where Spurs are at the minute . It shows their arrogance that he didn't even use the usual targets of us, Everton, etc, he just went straight to the current top 5 clubs. Fantasy land, I hope they enjoy the next decade in the lower leagues with the mackems.

Then generally it's the manager who carries the can and the DoF gets away with it for a few more years. There's nothing a DoF can do that the right manager and chairman can't do between them.  You use Southampton as an example but it was the chairman behind Adkins' sacking, not Les Reed. I think both clubs have similar trophy hauls than Villa and both have more success in recent years to point to (if you're going to cite the European Cup in '81 as a success then you have to include all the success of the other two in the 80s etc.) Like you say, it makes no sense on any level whatsoever. The Fish 10866
One thing I don't get is their claim that the only reason they don't have comparable attendances to us is that we're a one club city.  Villa have a huge catchment area (Birmingham Metropolitan area population = c3.7m ) from which they can claim a core Aston Villa fan base? Even if you permit that Birmingham City, West Brom, Walsall and Wolves eat into the available population, those clubs aren't exactly flooding their stadiums either. It's not competition that's keeping people from Villa Park, it's a lack of interest.
