I'm amazed every time I see the little twerp, a grown man decked head to toe in club shop clobber. What an absolute throbber he is.

I guarantee he has Arsenal wall paper, bed sheets, mouse pad, etc in his room at his parents house.

I still remember exactly where and when I first heard he'd come back.

Me too. My first reaction was disappointment that they were going to spoil Keegan's reputation with the supporters as I didn't think he had a chance with the state of the club at the time coupled with the fact he'd been out of football for a few years and never managed.

If only Ashley had the same kind of fearless ambition that Sir John Hall had, Benitez may have had a similar galvanising impact on the club and the city. If we had an owner who reached for the stars instead of looking for pennies in the gutter, we might see a proper trophy at St James' Park.

Might also have been beneficial for Ashley to look at the profit SJH made from his time at the club following a bit of investment.

To be fair it's a totally different landscape now, with a large but not ludicrous investment a 2nd tier club could challenge for the top flight title, that's simply not the case now. The gap's increased too much.

Surely most of the profit came from the story, and the attention that rise brought?

You're certainly playing for higher stakes nowadays but it is possible. How much has Spurs increased in value vs. Joe Lewis' investment?

Might be possible to get amongst the chasing pack (I think Southampton could do it if they could only get some stability in the manager's office), but I just can't see a Brighton surging to the summit of the Premier League without spending an eye-watering fortune, the likes of which even Man City and Chelsea would baulk at.

I'm talking about us though rather than Brighton. Having a 52k seater stadium puts us at a distinct advantage to most clubs aspiring to be at the upper end of the PL.

Typikul delewded Mag.

Leicester. Someone was bound to say it eventually. But I take your point and accept that was pretty much a fluke occurrence.

The Spurs example is a good one, though. Even before 'Arry, how many times had they been in Europe in the previous two decades?

I do think it's attainable for a club that a) are willing to invest, and B) appoint the right manager. We've already got B) and not many teams do. I can see Everton building up a head of steam with Koeman now, but there's no one else outside that top 6 really.
