Dr Gloom 21961
It's basically how the premier league started making gains. In the early days it was seen as a retirement home for past it European stars seeking a final payday
ewerk 30653
And we've seen how that has benefitted the England football team.
Dr Gloom 21961
it's all the slightly more mercenary players they've attracted , some of them still im their prime and decent players (oscar/ramieres/witsel/Ba/Gervhino) but none of them big big names if they'd managed to pull off signing the likes of Ronaldo with that insane offer or another starting 11 player from the likes of madrid/barca/city/munich etc it'd have set a precedent , but the other lads mixed in with twilight year players like Tim Cahill/Pelle/lavezzi and also rans like Kakuta, who cares, it's the MLS with more money not sure it is the same as that, without a world equivalent of the champions league it's a gateway to nothing. Money talks. The more they throw around, the more seriously it'll be taken.
Rayvin 5226
Not convinced by that. If there's one thing that the PL has taught us in recent years its that overpaid mercenary footballers are no guarantee of success. China are taking the Man Utd/PSG approach, and while it'll serve them to a point, they're going to end up with serious imbalances in teams who have players of PL standard and others of Non-league standard. This is going to pull the PL standard ones down. More importantly, they don't have the sustainability behind them in terms of money. People aren't going to tune in and watch crap football - not in Europe, anyway. I don't think even the Chinese will be that arsed about their home teams once the initial excitement wears off. Kid Dynamite 7034
It's professional pride vs personal wealth. It's not like Juve would've been offering buttons. I get that and if Juve offered £1mil a year and Shanghai offered £2mil I pick Juve every time. But £20mil a year over 3 seasons isn't just enough to retire on, it's enough for you and your entire extended family to retire on

They could let their whole home towns retire on what they'd earn in Europe.

Rayvin 5226
Double the amount of holiday homes and lavish cars Yeah but why? For what? There's a point, I'm sure, where I'd take job satisfaction over another holiday home that I might use once or twice a year.

I could spend 15 mill on a chalet in Courchevel to spend my retirement winters in if I went to China. Can't see why anyone would spurn the opportunity to have a significant amount more. There'll always be stuff to spend it on

The Fish 10872
I totally understand Tevez taking a final payday for frankly ludicrous sums, he's won plenty, played for massive clubs, represented his country and has been highly regarded. Oscar is 25, he could easily have won some more trophies at decent clubs for a couple of years before moving out there. Make no mistake, it's not the players wanting to move to China, none of them are aching to ply their trade for the likes of Gangzhou, it's the agents after another fat paycheck. I think you'll see a lot of brazilians make the move following the likes of Paulinho, he's getting paid a huge amount of money and he still gets into the brazil team which will matter a lot more to the likes of Oscar than sitting on the bench for Chelsea and not getting called up. Oscar could easily move to another top European league and win actual proper trophies while still earning a crust and improve his chances of being picked for the national side (which by the way cannot hold the same mystique as it once did, given the shite that have turned out for their countries), and still get a big money move in 5 years time. I reckon that's a very english way of looking at national teams tbh. Toni Kroos made a Germany 7-1 Brazil joke in a happy new year tweet a couple of days ago and then had to apologise to Marcelo because it upset him that much, the brazilians think about their national team differently to us. It cannot be as difficult for a player to get into their National team, moving to China doesn't impact it, so surely moving from Chelsea's bench to a title chasing French side, or Portuguese side wouldn't be to his detriment? Why bother moving to those teams when winning with them means nothing to you? May as well go and take the piss in china, still getting what means most to you in a footballing sense whilst making 5 or 6 times as much.

Not to everyone, demonstrably not to a lot of south american players who come to europe to get paid so they can look after their families then go home to Santos or Boca or wherever and win some stuff with them where they actually care. Time was the best way to do that was to be amazing, work incredibly hard and win titles so you get massive wages, bonuses etc. Now, just go to china, earn it all much more easily and still get to play for your country. Lovely work if you can get it.

The standard of play in China isn't going to reach the same levels as Europe under this model though. Even with 'superstars' they'll be brushed aside. The lack of competition will, over time, have a detrimental effect on the players who go out there.
