Generic small time football blather thread 2015/16

I wonder if we'd be more or less in the position we're in now. I think the longer we go from the relative success of the Keegan/Robson era, the less influence that time period will have on the overall trendline of our success. So yeah, we'd have gone down, probably had a wholesale clearout, maybe headed into financial ruin, but eventually we'd have come back right? Then again, the Keegan era got us to 52k seats, and with 36k it's less likely we'd have had the financial muscle to pull back.

There's a million other variables mind.

I don't think you can overstate the importance of momentum in football and that goal was, for me, the moment the pendulum swung back.

Well aye, I'm just saying that it appears to have swung away again - what's to say things wouldn't have mapped out broadly the same (on average) had we gone down, just with different people involved and some deviations to the specifics?

I do get the point about momentum though - and it's unlikely we would have enjoyed a period anywhere near as satisfying as the PL Keegan era without that moment.

I'm already building up Mitrovic's winner in the cup game against Hull as a David Kelly moment.

just got tickets for the forest home game. taking the bairn to his first ever live match. i'm not sure he's that bothered as he struggles to sit through a whole game on the telly but i hope he falls in love. he'll stick out like a sore thumb with his plummy southern accent.

That would be special. And I'm pretty fucking sure we can turn Hull over ffs. They've got bigger fish to fry anyway.

IF you were Phelan would you play a strong 11 so they carried a positive result into their league form, or would you play a weaker side so your strongest side was hale and healthy for the league, but don't have the confidence boost?

The latter. Because IF I was Phelan, I'd be mindful of the fact that Hull barely have 10 outfield players to their name, and can't afford to take risks.

Who's to say that if we had went down we might not have been ripe for an Arab or Russian takeover that could have propelled us into the European elite by now.  It's possible but it's more likely that we'd never have seen the modernisation of the club and in particular the stadium to where it is now.  We'd have quite possibly called time on the experiment of Kevin Keegan and we'd have never seen us beat Barca, or Juve or even played in European competition.  One thing I know for certain is we'd have gone into the third tear of English football for the first time in our history.

Personally I don't think you can overplay the significance of that goal and result against Portsmouth given the time it happened.  If we'd went down ten years earlier like the tramps it might not have been such a big thing to anything other than our pride.  But right then on the verge of the Premier League I think it would have been a massive shift in our history.

Easy to say, and I don't want to sound like a knob but you had to have been there, felt the despair, the gut wrenching fear of going to the 3rd division, the financial implications, Hall probably jacking it and not giving KK any help, like DK said, KK would've been allowed to go, the probability that time had run out and weren't looking like scoring and then DK wellied the cunt from nowhere in the corner beyond the Knight was it? Cue bedlam, utter, utter relief fused with delirium/ecstasy/basically going fucking mental. Like I said, you had to have been there. Even the following week at Leicester was basically the same, only difference was there was obviously less fans to witness it, (I was in a bar listening on a radio, every fucker like a new dad awaiting the news that their lass and the baby were OK). It was certainly character building as a supporter.
