Imagine a Leicester fan saying to a Villa fan in August "with 31 games played we'll have 49 points more than you." They'd reply "ootha woi raywnd more loik". Mental season and if we stay up seeing Villa go down it will be great.

Is that a Brummie accent?

There definitely isn't a place for him. The team clearly plays better without him. I'd take him for whatever dressing room respect he commands but that's it. Not first team.

England always look pretty good in the run up to tournaments and always disappoint once there though, so this result changes nothing really. Nice to see them come back and win it though.

Rooney shouldn't have been an automatic starter last tournament, let alone now. He's had enough chances. And doesn't deserve to be automatic choice on his reputation - particularly given his history in major international tournaments, let alone now, when there are younger, quicker players who deserve to start ahead of him.

But I fully expect Hodgson to continue to start him regardless, continuing in the long line of England coaches who pick players based on reputation and the club they play for ahead of form and ability.

3 World Cups - 1 Goal. All that needs to be said about Rooney and international tournaments.

Last night was a perfect example of how much better England are without him these days.

The young lads played well, Dier and Alli were cracking (Alii's late miss aside). Kane and Vardy showed they can work together which is good. I just have no confidence in Hodgson to learn much from this, he even said that Dier is in Wilshere's shadow when it comes to selection before the game.

Vardy should have played from the start, it was a friendly and surely the main thing that we could hope to learn is if Vardy and Kane were able to play together but instead he had Vardy on the bench and Welbeck or Lallana filling the spot. I also feel he's going to try and shoehorn Rooney into the side no matter what. Henderson and Cahill looked pedestrian again.

I'd like to see him play Barkley over Henderson for the next friendly and start Vardy over either Lallana or Welbeck, a midfield 3 of Barkley, Alli and Dier would be positive and dynamic which would make a change from the normal plodding displays we normally see there. Again though I'm yet to be convinced that any of this matters and I'm sure in Hodgsons mind Rooney is an automatic starter, he will take Wilshere as long as he is going to be able to play at some point in the Tournament and Vardy will start on the bench.

Sometimes it seems like scoobos deliberately takes up controversial positions... I actually can't recall how good Shearer was towards the end of his England career, or who else was available at the time. Does this criticism ring true?

England actually have a few decent players this time. They look up for it too. I agree it'd be typical for Hodgson to start Rooney and Walcott and mess things up again.

Vardy, Kane, Barkley, Alli. They're hungry and in the form of their lives. Give them a go and you never know what could happen.
