 Beckham single handedly dragged England to 2002 World Cup.

Not that that mattered.

Oh and if being shit for England means scoring more goals for England than anyone else (including Own Goal who's had a 143yr career) then I hope we see many more players being shit for England in the future.

Tbf, I watched that Greece game twice and Beckham had an outstanding last 30 mins. It was at home against Greece though. Not that I subscribe to the notion you have to top 20 players of all time material to be 'great'.

I think the one thing we know for sure about the future is that they're going to be a few shit players playing for England.

:tease:

Should do a top 10 great Pakistani players, see how many we've all heard of ;)

That's fair.

I honestly think grassroots coaching is more to blame for England's inadequacies in tournament football, than Beckham or Rooney. The player's aren't educated* or adaptable enough to pick up a new system in the few sessions they get as part of the England set up.

* educated in different styles of play or different roles, not Chaucer.

So the list of excuses for both Beckham and Rooney being shit at World Cups are injuries, recovering from injuries, bad luck, referees,`playing away', teammates being shit, coaching, and ( teammates ) not being adaptable enough to pick up new systems.

And the list of reasons they're shit is... totally fucking non-existent. I honestly cannot believe you watch football, you're wrong about everything.

You think Radgemaat is a coward, that Glenn Murray is the answer to our striker problem and you think England's top goal scorer is shit. All of these opinions are demonstrably untrue.

Well done Rooney for this goal scoring carry on, but for me it's much easier now than it was all those years ago. For starters in Europe there was something like 26 countries in the 60s 70s and 80s, now there's how many? 52? Yugoslavia and the USSR were decent sides. Those countries dissolved and obviously a whole host of weak football countries like Macedonia (pop. smaller than Tyneside) and Azerbaijan became European opposition. Not to mention the likes of San Marino, Faroes and now fuckin Gibraltar ffs. My point is I think Bobby Charlton's record at this moment in time is better than Rooney's. Just my thoughts on it.

Arguably the quality of the football from the smaller nations is much better than it was in Charlton's time.

True but he was never an out and out striker the way Rooney is today and who are we to say who was better Finland in 1964 or Gibraltar 2015. He was largely speaking an attacking midfielder with the best shot that most of us know of certainly till the 80's.

Not even a debate as to who was the better player tbh.

Aye I think only a complete wank, who would put an argument up that it snows regularly in the Sahara Desert, could say Rooney is better than Charlton.

One thing I will say about Bobby Charlton is this.....what a legendary player he is but he's one of Britain's most miserable dour cunts. Fair enough the Munich Air Disaster will have effected him but still he'd give Rob W a run for his money in the dourness stakes.

 Aye, another moot point as to who you'd rather go for a pint with between him and his brother.

Jack, met him in, crumbs can't remember the name on the quayside on the corner under the bridge across and to the left of offshore 44. Anyway he was really nice and was telling stories about being Ireland manager.

Might have said before but I disliked Jack because of his tenure but I don't mind him now after reading a quote that the only team that got him out of his seat when they score is NUFC. Considering he was a lifer at one club that's good crack especially compared with his completely indoctrinated Manc cunt brother.

I met Jack Charlton when I was about 10 in Stamfordham and he gave me an autograph, he was great to me. He patted my head and said "good laerd". A lot more about him than his shitey brother who should support Newcastle to this day.

Would love to have seen Bobby Charlton in his pomp. The way he's been described to me makes me think he could have played in the modern game. A striding midfield general, strong, direct, a cannon of a long shot and a great range of passing. I'm guessing (having only seen clips of him) that he was the prototype for Gerrard?

Like I say, only ever seen compilations of clips, which normally only show a ball leaving his boot like an exocet.
