Well the defence isn't likely to suddenly start outperforming the attack at a higher level if it isn't at this level

Yes but with Rafa's counter attacking style you'd think he'd already be looking at setting up the team to be able to absorb pressure. Its more of a team job than relying on one defender to get you out of trouble. We would need defensive improvements without a doubt, LB especially in my opinion. But I think it'd be easier than finding a fast, powerful centre forward Parky was talking about who you need to be able to convert more chances than not. Still question marks on that over our current pair, at that level anyway.

Is that only because the other teams are fairly shit though? I think the team has shown it can do both when needed, and that's encouraging. Rafa seems to be able to shape the team strategy into whatever is needed.

Is it a counter attacking style? Away from home, maybe but At home, we set out to blitz teams and dominate possession. I don't see this a counter attacking side at all

The way we're set up away from home is a pretty good indication of how we'll be set up mostly next year I think. Considering we'll be underdogs in many matches and Rafa's traditional focus on defending first. Unless there's a dramatic squad overhaul we wont be bossing possession in the premier league.

Wish Rafa would change our tactics

It's no criticism of Rafa to say that I'd like to see the two strikers given a go.  Clearly you can't argue with the results he's getting but most of the time we've played with a poor looking Diame or Perez as a second striker.  I don't see what we would lose in playing an actual striker in that role, and I think it could result in seeing the very best from both players.  As I said though, we're getting the results the way we're going, so there's no great need to make the change.

I generally wish the current trend of playing one up front would end though.  Football is much more of a joy to watch with a partnership up front.

Agree with all of that, we're getting the results but we're playing a bloke that's doing next to fuck all. It's similar to when we went 11 unbeaten with Obertan playing and Pardew kept refusing to change him because the results were good. I still think Diame could contribute but as I said in another thread I think he'd be more of an asset to us as a CM, Mitro or Perez playing close to Gayle would do more than him there.

Diame has always been a midfielder whenever I had seen him before.  And I've seen him look an absolute beast there on a number of occasions.   But he's failed to make any impact on games playing where he is for us.  I don't think it's a technical problem, he just can't seem to get involved in the game.  Perez looks more comfortable there but more often than not this season he's been poor when he's had the ball.  It just seems to me that the position Diame is trying to take up means he's basically playing as a striker anyway.  Surely we'd be better off using a striker to do that.

Aye that's what I think as well, I'd either play Diame alongside Shelvey (perhaps that would be too aggressive mind) or not at all. As you say he takes up striking positions, he also doesn't really track back much where he is so he is basically operating as a forward anyway. His finishing is also very poor from the positions he gets into evidenced by the sitters he misses.

I agree but two up top isn't a system we're going to play next season in the PL and Rafa is most likely of the mind that we should be drilling the players into a system we can continue next year rather than having a period of adjustment when we go up.

I agree with how Rafa will want to set up next season, but I don't really think it's the way we're playing now.  Diame is basically playing as a forward.  Perez is the nearest we really have to a number 10 but he's been poor (a couple of games aside) playing in that role.  I do think we're nominally set up with a one striker one number 10 formation but without a real number 10 to play there, we're not really following through with it.  So in that case, we might as well play two actual strikers rather than a striker and a midfielder who doesn't seem to know where to play.

Banned for 3 games after accepting a charge for Violent conduct.

How many other players will get banned for trial by media?

Loads over the next month or so while the FA stamp this new retrospective banning into place.

I like Nitro, I think he has good potential, I think he is of value to us, I think he will score his share of goals, but.....................

I think it would be as well to get shot of him as he is a constant suspension in waiting.

Nah he's pretty shit as a striker too - stats don't lie. He's a very passionate inept liability.

His stats are actually fairly solid. There's plenty that you could attack him on, his stats probably isn't what you want to choose.

How's life in the Championship?

We could do with a full time head-doctor. Sort out Shelvey & Mitrovic's discipline and convince Ashley, Barnes and Charnley the error of their ways.
