McFaul 35
Since 2007 (other than 2009 obviously) we've always started against a top four side. I'm going for Newcastle v Man Utd at SJP.
Haydnator 45
City or Chelsea away 1st game. No Bournemouth at home.

The Fish 10856
Fixture changes already! Â Mind you, if Koeman takes the preliminary rounds seriously we've a better chance of a win against Southampton. Â Would help to have a striker and a centre back and a left sided attacking midfielder in place by then mind...
ewerk 30598
Playing them coming off an early away fixture to some shitty Eastern-European team (hopefully) would be a big help.
Gemmill 44853
In the times when we had competitive games before the season started, we were flying come the first games of the season. I think the sharpness they'd gain would outweigh any fatigue, particularly that early in the season.

There's an argument for treating the Preliminary rounds of the Europa as a friendly competition, so you get match fitness asap. If you get knocked out, no real loss, if you progress don't you get an opportunity to revise your squad list?
Gemmill 44853
It's competitive football, however you look at it. There'll be an argument for me turning you upside down and treating your head as a speed ball if you continue this line of argument.

We played competitive games in the far east in 96, then hammered in that pathetic 4-0 defeat at Wembley in that glorified friendly, the season starts and we win 7 out of the first 8. PaddockLad 17252
Don't think there's much rhyme or reason to a competitive pre season....the first season in the intertoto we were flying...the season we had Partizan in the champs league we got lost our first three league games, were knocked out in the second leg by the serbs and Sir Bob was sacked

I agree, hoping to pick up draws against Southampton and Swansea is a depressing state of affairs, but it's where we are these days.
