well ths Saudis have 600 years of reserves.......................... Russia probably more

and western companies don't bother looking for any oil that they can't bring on stream in more than 5-10 years just doesn't make sense to spend cash now on sommat you aren't going to need for decades

The answer is never.

Even if there was a theoretically possible moment when oil runs out, we will never arrive at that point. As the notion of 'running out' would entail a massive restriction in supply, the ensuing price rises would be so big that investing enormous sums of money into more efficient alternatives would become overwhelmingly attractive. At this point, the alternatives would require 'sunk costs' of investment meaning behaviors would automatically shift away before the oil runs out completely. Of course the shift to alternatives may happen sooner in which even more oil would be left.

Answer: Never.

According to a BP report they reckon at current consumption rates the world has 40 yeas of oil reserves left.
