Ken 119
so if Mr Putin decides not to stop at Ukraine but to roll back to 1989 what do you do to stop him??? Not with nukes. The US would need to do it the diplomatic way and send in a few thousand tanks to line the border of the Czechs and Poles against the Russians. Ken 119
The people of Shepherds Bush need a deterrent for all the Australians there. Yes, let's all dance in unison while under the influence of THC and MDMA and think all will be right in the world in the end.

However only 4 of the G8 including us have Nuclear weapons so how does that make it essential?
JJ 0
Miliband gave the game away on Thursday when pressed on whether he would actually press the button. He said absolutely not. Anyone can look at that if he ends up PM and assume that it's not a deterrent anymore. It's an ornament. That article is hilarious. Trident isn't a deterrent. It's a symbol of status. And as the UK loses most of it's world status, some are desperate to hold onto it. And how do we protect it? By promoting conflict disguised as promoting peace. Britain is both promoting nuclear disarmament while spending money on nuclear weapons. It's ass backwards.

Kevin Carr's Gloves 3961
That really wasn't the crux of his point tbh It was a large art of it saying we had responsibilities due to our status in the world. Great nuclear weapons as cock extensions.

If he meant even in retaliation for a nuclear attack on this country he's a fucking buffoon, although we knew that already. Of course it's a deterrent, we certainly wouldn't use it pre-emptively but unless its part of a global disarmament, we should absolutely replace it. Maybe if we cut our foreign aid down to reflect the size of country we are now we could afford to replace trident over a few years for basically free. As an example, we pay Pakistan around £400Mill a year in aid, they have nukes and have just developed/deployed their own pilotless armed drone, there, amongst other places, would be a good place to start. NJS 4411
The first thing to check is whether the button works without US say - Polaris certainly didn't. The idea that it deters anything by anyone is fucking laughable.

It takes 48 hours to deploy, after we've got permission from the US. What does it deter exactly? If anyone wants to attack us in a situation where we might use Trident to retaliate, we're already fucked. Maybe if we don't bother to renew Trident we can solve poverty in our own country for essentially free. But of course, that would mean us getting our priorities right. Your point on Pakistan is certainly worth talking about, but you seem to conflate the idea that if we stop giving money to countries with nuclear weapons we can have nuclear weapons of our own. Trident is a cock waving look at us status symbol that is illegal to use, can't be fired discriminately, costs far too much, and is part of Britain's very odd strategy that "the world is a dangerous place, so let's ensure we keep it relatively dangerous" which ensures that nuclear disarmament is permanently impossible. Maybe if we stopped living in an age where we think we're still a colonial power we can start looking at this debate objectively.
Dr Gloom 22142
what it comes down to is, are we prepared to accept out new role in the world stage? renewing trident would suggest we're not. Edited April 21, 2015 by Dr Gloom
Christmas Tree 4821
Our history is littered with invasions from Europe. The last attempt still in living memory. Who knows what will happen in 10, 20 or 30 years. Guaranteed that no Europeans are sending future army's thisaway with Nuclears in our arsenal. Disgraceful this lefty shit is still getting an airing.
