Is it more or less realistic that Newcastle United will be relegated?

Ashley's decision to appoint a no mark like Carver, who has done nothing at all in his four game audition to suggest he is "head coach" material has increased the chances of us getting sucked into the relegation picture. If you don't see that you've got your head in the clouds.

There are clear changes in approach over the 7 years depending where the club were tbf.

Spent to try get fans on side.

Slash and burn sales to steady the wage bill

Moderate investment for promotion and to secure PL status.

Spent more in summer than in the previous 5 summers combined in a limited attempt to push on.

Agree with this. Probably not a popular opinion, but Ashley's Newcastle have moved forward in some ways.

From where? You could argue we've been nudged from relegation certainties to also-rans, I suppose. Whoop-de-fucking-do

Yes it is more likely but is that the same thing as Newcastle United's relegation being likely?

West Brom employing Pulis makes it more likely that West Brom will finish in the European spots...

Someone said Carver has one point from four matches. It's worth pointing out that he couldn't have got any points from the Leicester match.

There were signs in a couple of those matches that he'd get them playing better football that Pardew. The team played better football than Pardew's team.

I don't think he's very good, but I think he's good enough not to get relegated.

More likely, yes. That is the point. That is why people are venting and unable to be joyous ffs.

He's appointed someone, potentially as full time future coach, who has done nothing to suggest he's capable and who no one wants. Not for the first time he's prepared a shit sandwich for tea and he's asking us to tuck in with the promise of a scrotum shandy to wash it down and putrid puke pudding for afters.

The 8 point margin is probably enough of a head start to save us but I fully expect a nervous end to the season now with us flirting with the relegation places, all thanks to Mike. I don't see us finishing 9th as you suggest we might, more likely somewhere in the bottom 5 or 6.. GREAT

I also think Ashley has a plan to advance the team beyond mid table. But I should probably see someone about that.

I don't need to when the crux of your argument is that a huge losing spread bet wasn't a gamble

OK let me break down your argument as simply as I can.

Losing: If a bluechip company acquires a start up that fails, does it then become a gamble?

Gambling: Why do casinos never go broke? They do nothing but gamble. :o

We went to QPR on the last day a couple of years back needing a win to stay up. We did, and Pardew kept his job. The bar for Carver staying in the job is very low

But Mike Ashley did lose  which kind of proves there was an element of risk in his spread bet. Therefore it was a gamble. One that he lost. You can use all the jargon you want to but you're spectaculatly wrong

He gambled on the future price of HBOS. ie an investment. Just because he decided not to use the futures market for whatever reason doesn't change that fact.

I like the idea that he decided to roll the dice with what I believe was about 25% of his net worth at the time.

Ah ok, so that is interesting. Anything that has an element of risk is a gamble?

According to that definition, any business transaction that doesn't involve immediate settlement is a risk. If I make a business loan that involves credit risk, market risk, systemic risk etc. So every loan is a gamble, so the question is what steps have you taken to minimise the risk - collateral etc.

I think you need to be a bit more specific.

Is The Fish too, for expressing the exact opposite sentiment? Apparently. Makes about as much sense as expecting a better manager to be appointed.

Better than who? Carver?

It seems that Carver is both the worst coach around and better than the next guy can possibly be.

Risk assesment rules everything we do, including lumping on HBOS shares or indeed the 3-15 at Lingfield :cuppa:
