Only tedious Tory homemaker gays worry about such things. :)

What do you think though - should universities be able to discipline professors and students for not using preferred pronouns?

I don't really have an opinion on the matter, but I'd like to think a professor would be disciplined for being a dick towards a student in any shape or form, and wilfully misusing a preferred pronoun (i.e. persistently, not just the occasional slip out of habit with someone who's changed) seems like a bit of a dick move. Students' behaviour towards other students, well, that's a different matter, most young people are arseholes at some time or another. It's kind of what university is for.

He's been offered some kind of re-education which is compulsory or he'll lose his job. I haven't been following it but that's in the vid somewhere. It seems a bit odd to me that there is this much fuss about what is effectively 0.003% of the population. Of course there is a case to be made about people who have and want to be gender reassigned and want to be respected for 'who they are' etc...But reading that in some prisons the state has paid for gender reassignment seems a bit odd and frankly far fetched.

I'm always uncomfortable when anyone mentions 're-education'. Sounds Orwellian.

That's exactly what he's saying from what I can make out. Language is the essence of thought and civilization and once you start ring fencing it you suffocate critical and imaginative thinking. He might lose his license because he doesn't want to be forced to refer to people as 'ze' or 'zir' or 'Xe' or whatever the lingua franca is (I don't know that much about it). I don't know where this ends. If language is codified by the state and legislated by boards where does that leave us. Thought crime? ;)

On Trudeau:

 Such a hypocritical fuck.

I don't know, I think the commentator's argument here is pretty facetious.

I don't necessarily see the hypocrisy in being a feminist and sitting down with these people.  You're going to have to have a relationship with people you don't agree with (or even respect) to get along in politics.

What's the alternative?  Send them home/cut ties/expect an archaic institute like this to suddenly embrace the 21st century?  These things take generations.

He's clearly a politician, so fuck him, hang them all etc.  But if he doesn't play the game he's just another Corbyn.

I think the real issue here is the idea that we have somehow gotten into a position wherein the left, with its values of equality and equal representation of women, has joined hands with an extreme right wing ideology. If we had a Christian church that was talking about the same values, would he have visited it? I'd be more convinced of the 'good' this attitude could do if someone heading up the identity politicking left actually came out and said what it was. I presume it is, as you say, to obliterate Islam over the course of several generations. To keep the people and annihilate the ideology. Which I'd be fine with if they said it. Because actually, Muslims deserve to know this also.

It's probably your final point that's the crux of it. It's just a game and to these people it's all meaningless save for what it takes to keep power.

I'm not following you at all here. How is going to events at mosques, segregated or not (they all are, by the way, as are Coptic churches, many Eastern Orthodox parishes, Orthodox Jewish communities, etc.) representative of a secret leftist agenda to obliterate Islam?

I'm not suggesting is a secretive conspiracy, I'm just wondering why they align themselves with a hard right ideology. Presumably it's because the view is that, over time, they eliminate the Islamic values that are held within these communities - in effect, they turn them into normal Westerners.

I'm just supposing that this must be the reason.

Of course the West want to secularise Muslims.  Any rational person would at least want COE-syle Muslim-lite.

Nah. :D

Read up on it.

Start with the Western take down of Iraq, Libya and now Syria. (All multi-faith and Sunni and Shia and Kurd constituents - broadly secular).

Western backed Jihad in Uzbekistan, Tajikstan and Turkistan (Turks support the jihadis here as well). All secular states currently.

Rise of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt after Western tinkering there.

It seems to me that the Gulf states along with other bad actors are on a mission to take down secularist Muslim countries.

Yeah, my mistake.  Obviously the PTB want to import Sharia law to the West.

Doubt it. But nevertheless the record of intervention and meddling tells a strange story. It's probably more that they want to get at Russia and destabilize the old middle eastern powers for the benefit of Israel. Gulf States have an unbroken campaign of looking to take out Syria and also with an eye on Iran. The blow back of this policy is that it strengthens and energises the home made Islamic fundamentalists.
