I reckon Fish is dead on. While rivalry is good fun, I have to admit that it can be fucking cringeworthy between Geordies and Mackams at times. It's a fookin game ffs, and despite the old pub tales of an age old rivalry that goes back to Catholicism in Sunderland that's horse shit, my mate was at the 1966 world cup final and geordies and mackams all got together to get there.

It felt a bit nawty getting on a metro full of them, like. I'm genuinely surprised that there wasn't much bother, especially considering the result.

Ashley & Pardew have successfully neutered most of the support. People in twatter genuinely saying that Ashley's the best owner nufc can get and Pardew is the bet manager that Ashley's NUFC can get.

Nonsense, but indicative of the beigeing of our black & white club.

The conduct of their fans at the derby, on top of the magnificent gesture of raising £33,000 in memory of John and Liam, was absolutely impeccable. Gus Poyet also went up considerably in my estimation, with his well-chosen and classy response to the events of the game and the day itself. While losing the game in the last minute was deeply disappointing, the fact is, it is only a game and the mutual applause, and indeed respect, at various junctures in the proceedings show that, in all seriousness, there is far more that unites us rather than divides. They deserve to enjoy their fourth successive victory over us and it is instructive to bear in mind the mantra I feel we should all live our supporting lives by; gracious in victory, dignified in defeat. The fact there were only 27 arrests is a source of immense pride to me and as a result of such a statistic. I hope, one day not too soon, that followers of both clubs will be able to mix freely in the pubs before the game, exchanging handshakes before and after the match. Who knows; in time, perhaps we have an end to segregation inside the ground? I’m a firm believer that if you treat people like adults, they will behave like adults.

In earnest, as can be seen from the reaction to the defeat on here, no one considers it to be a particularly big deal any more (at least on TT). Maybe that's a sign of change in attitude, but it could also be apathy about the way our club is run.

I was pissed off but (to my surprised and consternation) I found myself not arsed about 5 mins later. Not sure if that's 100% down to the 'Mike Ashley effect' but it's a massive factor in my caring a lot less.
