Carrick has never played for us. We aren't his old team.

 

Also, you asked when it's ok for the player to refuse to celebrate. Not when is it ok for you to consider it ok for the player not to celebrate.

If a player thinks he's been treated well at a certain club and tones down the celebration as a mark of respect, I dont see anything wrong with it. Nothing wrong the with opposite scenario either, celebrating against a former team you feel you need to prove a point against. Perhaps not in a Adebayor-esque way though.

Well that's the crux of it, if Carroll scores and does a little happy jump and a smile and gives Kev some hugs I won't care, if he charges over to the away end and starts flicking the V's and burning £50s I'll be a bit annoyed. Would be slightly bemused if he didn't celebrate at all.
