Barring a massive and sustained downturn in results I think he's got at least until the end of the season. With the points we have on the board at this stage of the season we should be safe from relegation and with little hope of a European spot there's little point in sacking him before the summer.

 

And I reckon Sammy looks like he'd be good craic for a few pints.

pardew deserved all the shit he got when we're looking like relegation fodder so you have to tip your hat to him that he's managed to turn it around with an impressive winning streak. i honestly thought there was no way back for him but he's definitely resilient. still think he's an ordinary manager but he deserves credit for the recent revival.

I think there's a lot more than you think there would be.

 

He's not in the same league as Tan and Allam, iyam. I hate that he's devoid of ambition, but I think that if he'd stumbled upon a Martinez, Pochettino, Koeman or whomever, we'd be attacking the Europa League spots with more gusto, simply because those managers would improve the games of the more mercurial footballers at the club.

Pochettino has already complained about the status quo at White Hart Lane, but I think (if sold properly) you could phrase the role they'd play in such a way as to make Newcastle United an exciting prospect; working with an exceptional scouting team that's consistently uncovering fresh young hungry talent, huge stadia, phenomenal and unwavering support, great opportunity to bring silverware to one of England's most underachieving clubs, yada yada yada

 

Martinez has had to work within a tight budget at Wigan and now at Everton, Koeman (pre-Southampton) could have been easily convinced that Newcastle would propel him into the next strata of managers and Pochettino... well maybe not him.

 

My original point was that if Ashley hadn't already had a prior relationship with Pardew and he'd stumbled onto a young manager with bags of potential (as those three have) we'd be gunning for the bigger prizes by virtue of them being simply better at their job than Pardew. Even with the financial constraints put on us by our Hutt overlord.

I think you're right, if those managers were all in their previous roles (well Pochettino pre-Southampton). They're now all going to be looking for a move up in their next role to clubs with serious ambition which would be an impossible dream for Newcastle to sell. The key is obviously to get them before their talent becomes obvious to all and sundry but for every success story there's three failures.

 

I think Ashley is happy with the devil he knows.

I can't imagine we have anyone at the club who would be able to spot a good manager before their talent becomes obvious. That's the bigger problem iyam. There a plenty of managers who would love the job and there will be a lot who could do it but we wouldn't have anyone who could find them.

Why'd you say that? I'm guessing that a lot of the skills and contacts required to have a good scouting network could be translated to finding a manager that has potential too?

I agree that the managers we've employed haven't struck me as being well-scouted. However, scouting is something we're doing quite well with, so why couldn't Carr and his merry band of peepers turn their collective experience and capability towards finding a young hungry, talented manager?

It's very much a different skill though, assessing players and managers. That job would be down to Charnley anyway and he has yet to have to face that problem.

 

Cortese at Southampton probably knew that Adkins was an average manager but had the foresight to look for someone better and appoint him even though the world was telling him that it was a mistake. I don't think we have anyone at the club with that sort of vision.

They could, I just don't see why they would risk anything at the moment. Even someone who in theory should come and do a great job has the potential to go tits up without explanation.

 

And my mine gripes with Pardew are the style of play we usually have (Ashley won't care about finding a replacement who plays nice football, just someone who'll get results) and his constant praise for Ashley and not rocking the boat for more ambition transfer wise, which any new manager will be expected to do as well, so I think we'll just end up with someone similar anyway.

 

So as depressing as it is I'm a bit apathetic towards him going because even if he does I see no reason to expect a major shift in strategy or us to go for a manager who plays nice football. Just got to hang tight until we get a reckless bilionaire football lover.

You're right. The risk would be that a manager would bomb and we'd be in the shit but the hope would be that a new manager could create a team capable of punching above its weight, as Koeman currently has Southampton doing.

 

Though it's certainly not a risk that Ashley is willing to take.

Besides, he's going nowhere unless we really are on the verge of getting relegated (again). If he survived the 16th season (was it the second last game we secured safety?) he'll survive plenty more dull, mid and even lower mid-table years imo as long as he continues to not rock the boat and actively praise the way the club is being run.
