Sell Cisse, buy a top French/Dutch league striker to replace him please Michael, if you're listening.

You have to be careful though. There's a distinct risk of Uefa Cup qualification the way things are heading.

I would keep Cisse for what it's worth. Looks like he found some form before his injury - not superhuman purple patch form either - but Freiburg form where he finished simple chances and got himself in the box at the right time.

Yeah, I don't think we need to sell, and if these five games show anything is that we need depth in all positions. It's not just being able to rely on Perez up front, but things like Haidara at left back instead of Santon, but it's players like Aarons, Ameobi, Obertan all hungry and exuberant on the pitch because they've got to make an impression.

Two or three more players and, as alex says, we're in danger of nabbing a Europa league spot. Hell, if De Jong is half the player we hope he is we could push for Champions League given the implosions happening in the North West and in North London.

Owing to his youth and relevant inexperience - in addition to Pardew being fairly senseless at times, there will no doubt be a patch of games where it looks like Perez can't buy a goal. Fair enough get rid of players if they're shite - but we need a sqaud tbh.

Its there for the taking. January will tell to a great extent who's willing to take a risk and put their name in the hat. Im waiting for Pardew to start reminding us that we signed 7 players in the summer and that we have a pretty strong squad these days.

Indeed.

To be honest, we might well see one of those, though it's Southampton, rather than Newcastle that's benefiting most. A fairly settled side, a very settled back line, a striker that's hitting the back of the net more often than not, a midfielder pulling the strings?

Yeah saints are looking in a very favourable position, away to villa tonight is very winnable for them. All they need to do is beat theteam's you'd think they have a chance of beating, results against the chelseas and man cities done matter a great deal for them.

While I've been delighted by the recent run and pleased with the fighting sprit in the team, I don't think we've played that great. Certainly nothing to suggest that once this purple patch ends, we'll be able to mix it up with the better teams. I fully expect us to plummet next month once we get a defeat.

In a sense though that might not be a terrible thing as the timing could work out quite well with the January window coming up. I guess the form of the players up to that point will have a massive baring on who (if anyone) we go for. You would say that a new centreback is a no brainer but gut given the recent form of Colo, Saylor, Dummett and even iron Mike on Saturday I can see them reconsidering any recruitment there. The emergance of Dummett as a viable option in the centre being the biggest factor (especially with Lacselles due to arrive in the summer). If he stays in the team when others are fit and keeps this form up then I can certainly see no investment there.

A striker is the next position you would look at, but with Cisse looking like he is actually capable of scoring again, Perez's emergance and SDJ coming back into the squad around January (coupled with the fact that Riviere's not had much of a chance yet and Chucky's managed nothing more than the bench), I wouldn't be at all surprised if we kept our powder dry.

The African Nations might well have an impact on our thinking though. If we are going to lose Cisse, Tiote and possibly Abeid for a month then we may have to look for something either up front or in a defensive midfield position. I actually think there's a fair chance Tiote is going to be off anyway so we may need a replacement depending on how Abeid comes on/Raylor's injury because it looks more and more like Anita is never going to be able to make it in that position here.

In regards to Cisse, if we're still operating within our usual policy of a 'purple' quota, then I'd rather we rolled the dice on someone new at this stage.

I don't think he's completely useless, he has a real knack of finding space in the box and finding a way to turn something goalward, but his overall contribution to our play is lacking and he'll be 30 in June. Started well this season but if I had to guess I'd say he'll get a ratio well below 1 in 2 by the end of it, so with our current transfer policy I'd rather we took £5-10m off anyone willing before his stock falls too low and put it towards a 25 year old.

Obviously, I'd rather just keep him and hoy £30m on the next big thing but hey ho.

If you're looking for a 1 in 2 striker you're going to have to throw £30m+ to get him. You're looking at an Aguero/Costa type player and even if we would spend that sort of money, they wouldn't come here.

Well Cisse was actually better than 1 in 2 at Freiburg FWIW and was £9m.

Doesn't have to be a 1 in 2, but his overall play isn't good enough if he's just contributing a goal every 3-4 games, which has been his rate for the last 2 seasons and which is what I'm saying I think he'll end up with again.

There's potential quality available for a lot less than £30m, it's just always a gamble as to how well they'll carry their form over, like the differing fortunes of Bony and Van Wolfsvinkel last year, both highly rated, both completely different outcomes. I just think at this stage if it's one purple out one purple in I'd rather gamble on a new option than on Cisse getting anything approaching his Freiburg form back, and we're running out of windows in which to get a decent fee for him.

Like I said though, I'd rather our transfer policy was just more ambitious but hey ho.

I agree, we've not played football that looks like it's the product of a cogent plan. We have massively benefited from facing teams who're struggling to find the back of the net. My worry is that when Pardew hasn't got a limited squad, he'll stuff Sissoko out wide, drop Cabella or Sammy and play De Jong too deep to have any real impact.

Perfect example is when Man City were struggling to break through a team, Mancini used to, (to the fury of the misunderstanding fans) bring on a defensive midfielder for David Silva or whoever, which allowed Yaya Toure more license to attack. When Taylor went off injured, Pardew brought on grafting, but fairly ineffective Gouffran and forced dynamic and direct Sissoko back.

I am hoping that Cabella and De Jong get us playing some lovely intricate padding football, but I think we'll continue to benefit from or suffer because of individual and isolated passages of decent play.

Think they'll be looking to get rid while we can still get money for him. Hence the search for a striker.

Here we go:

“It’s a great boost because we have had a terrible run of injuries and it’s testament to the squad that we have had a great run of results.”
