The drive from Bowness, through Grasmere and into Keswick must be up there with most places in the world That is beautiful but, imo even better (if you're going to Bowness/Ambleside/Windermere from our neck of the woods) is to still come off at Penrith onto the A66 but almost immediately leave that and take the A592. That way you go past Dalemain, Ullswater and through Kirkstone pass. Obviously you might reconsider that if the conditions are icy but it's a fantastic drive. It's an A road too so it's a good road all the way. Even better if you come off the A69 just before Haydon Bridge and come via Alston over the Pennines past the Hartside Cafe. Alex 35079 Posted December 5, 2016 Share Posted December 5, 2016 Love that view from up there where the Pennines ends and you have that patchwork quilt of fields before the mountains of the Lake District loom in the background. Also love that route along the A592 because almost straight after leaving the A66 you feel like you're right in the Lake District. The scenery changes that quickly. I fucking love the Lakes like.
