Park Life 71
There should be a new tax (15%) on foreigners buying UK property. What other things should they be doing but duck?
Kid Dynamite 7029
Stop killing the NHS Not giving MPs an 11% pay rise while nurses get a 5 year pay freeze (seriously, wtf) Edited October 16, 2014 by TheRollingStones
ewerk 30611
It isn't the government who have recommended the 11% pay rise and all three parties have said that the rise shouldn't go ahead. Though to be fair there are plenty of doctors on higher salaries than our MPs.

Wasn't the 1% across the board pay rise for nhs staff recommended by an independent body before being rejected by the government. 1% in 5 years ffs. Did I imagine wolfy there? Yep. As I mentioned before, I wonder how much any military involvement in Syria etc. might be costing. Without getting into the rights and wrongs of that money is suddenly made available when it 'needs' to be. A bit like there being no limit on helping out the flood victims of last winter, according to the PM.
ewerk 30611
Wouldn't the 1% be on top of a 3% automatic payrise that most NHS staff receive? I'm not that familiar with the facts tbh. The point of the independent pay panel for MPs was to take politics out of the issue with any pay rise always going to lead to bad publicity. AFAIA it's binding unlike the recommendation made by the NHS panel. Edited October 16, 2014 by ewerk

Don't know about most, doesn't apply to me or any of my colleagues who have suffered a 15% real term pay cut under this government. Why shouldn't increasing skills and experience be rewarded though? My massive 1% rise will be offset by increased pension contributions anyway. Wonderful. Where will it end? It's possible in another 5 years I'll be 25% worse off than a decade previously. As people hit the top of their band and can't progress this will increasingly affect nearly all nhs staff.
ewerk 30611
I'm not going to disagree that most NHS staff have been fucked over in recent years. It's just that the story has been framed as the government denying NHS staff a 1% rise while lining their own pockets. My understanding is that what they've proposed is a fairer deal where those who are in line for automatic increments aren't getting the 1% on top of that. Either way it's still a shit deal for all involved.
Park Life 71
The NHS must be protected at all costs. The EU don't like it and the Americans want to cream off bits of it as do most major drugs companies. IMO this will be the signature battle as to where this country will be going in the future. The Fish 10857
Could an argument be made that one reason we've so many chinless, witless, feckless politicians is that the pay doesn't reflect the roles level of responsibility and required expertise? In the private sector, someone holding that much sway would be paid more than the MPs are. I know they receive other benefits (housing etc.) but surely if you were to dump those and replace that with a high salary, you could pique the interest of men and women who normally wouldn't be interested? I'd levy a tax on money transfers out of the country by private individuals. You see loads of those money transfer stores in London, offering "great rates" to send money to Poland, or Ghana or wherever. I'd ring fence the "services" to protect them from short-sighted politicking. NHS, Armed, Emergency, Postal etc. Saying that, I'd bin off the RAF; fixed wing to the Navy, rotor to the Army, administrators split between them. Like Parky alluded to in the ISIS thread, we'd be better off with units of highly trained SAS soldiers because we're simply not going to be fighting a ground war that requires thousands of boots on the ground. Good stuff bro. Maybe need a new law to formalise the ring fencing of the NHS? Cast iron stuff.
