Alex 34954
Ah right, that makes sense. The Oval always used to take spin anyway, but that might have been cos they always used to play the final test of each home series there, so it was always late summer. I remember Tufnell taking a hatful there against Australia in 97, the same series where Hussain scored a double hundred in the first test. That was a brilliant series, even though England got howked in the middle 3 tests - the standard of cricket was higher then I reckon. Aye, he bowled the Windies out at the Oval a few years before that too (when they were class as well).
Dickie 0
Yes he had a few match winning performances through the 90s didn't he. He was a quality bowler on his day. I read his autobiography on holiday about 15 years ago and thought he came across as a sound enough bloke but whenever I've seen him on telly more recently he comes across as a bit of a wanker. He's good on TMS though.
Dickie 0
Winning any test match against that Aussie team was an achievement. The 97 vintage was immense. I credit Hussain and Fletcher for laying the foundations for the 2005 ashes win. He was an ugly batsman but a good captain and made us competitive again. Yes those two definitely tried to change the culture at the time. The 90s - early 2000s Aussie teams must be up there with the best sports teams of all time, 2001 Ashes team was better than 97 I reckon due to Gilchrist, Hayden, more mature Gillespie. Their rugby league team of the same era was also incredible as it happens, but being an international RL team they'll never be revered as a truly great international sports team cos the competition from other countries is so limited. He's good on TMS though. I think he comes across as trying to hard on the telly but seems more laid-back and natural on the radio. Like his Radio 5 show with Michale Vaughan as well. He probably should've played more for England but didn't exactly fit in with the 'cricketing establishment' or, even more so, with Gooch's efforts to raise the fitness levels of the team. Speaking of which, that series against the West Indies I mentioned (early 90s) was class. Gooch's match-winning century in the Headingley test was unbelievable. Without checking, I think he got about 150 out of a team score of 270-ish.

Kid Dynamite 7012
Nearly chucked it. Not sure I've ever seen a bowler with an average of
David Kelly 1224
Aye Collingwood made a right arse of that over. Fortunately Borthwick pulled him out of the shit with the last three balls of it then Arshad and Wood bowled two excellent overs. Wood looks very sharp. Dr Gloom 21869
looks like rashid will have to wait - cook says it'll be the same 11 at the oval, to no one's surprise.
Dickie 0
Aye it's a shame I think. It means they're going into a tour of the subcontinent without a full time spinner having played a single test this year. I know people are often reluctant to change a winning team and they probably want to give Vince a chance to get a score to his name, but to me it feels like a missed opportunity on a wicket that everybody expects to take spin. Arguably on current form swapping Rashid for Vince wouldn't even be weakening the batting too much.
Dr Gloom 21869
agreed. it sounded like bayliss fancied it, but cautious cook probably had the final say.

David Kelly 1224
Would have been 6 down but for no balls. Be interesting to see what happens when we bowl. If Boycott is right then it could just about be all over already.
Dr Gloom 21869
luckily two of our form batsmen are still at the crease. lots of questions remain going into the winter tour: who replaces vince? do you continue with moeen as a frontline spinner or does rashid start? can hales make it as an opener? has ballance done to deserve another go when other batsmen are making good cases in county cricket? do you stick with finn or bomb him for wood? Dr Gloom 21869
decent recovery. get through the evening session for the loss of a wicket or two and we're right back in the game.
