Alex 34954
Think there's only a few showers forecast tomorrow. Could actually hinder the side batting if that's the case.
Toonpack 9321
if they win, they'll be able to say they were vindicated but i don't see any logic in this at all other than boosting their averages. they might have been better off putting vince and ballance in to try to boost their confidence a bit if they just fancied a spot of batting practice other than the logic of getting into a position where only England can possibly win. Also putting extra miles into the Pakistan bowlers legs when next match is next week, not to mention the psychological element of piling up the runs. They were obviously batting to a time (40 minutes) rather than averages, that's just a silly notion tbh.
Dr Gloom 21868
other than the logic of getting into a position where only England can possibly win. They were obviously batting to a time (40 minutes) rather than averages, that's just a silly notion tbh. It's ridiculously cautious. The overnight lead of 450 or whatever it was would have been a world record test run chase. If they'd somehow inexplicably chased it down then you would have to say fair play to them. Let's be realistic though. The only way they were going to manage it would have been if the England pace attack all came down with food poisoning or something. Yes we may have batted them out of the game beyond all reasonable doubt but I think we already had tbh. We've got a world class pace attack. Back them to take 10 wickets and don't give the opposition a sniff of saving the match. That's what cook should have done Edited July 25, 2016 by Dr Gloom
Alex 34954
Don't see what batting for 40 mins or so this morning achieved like. Record successful run chase at Old Trafford is about 260. Don't really agree Pakistan have been given a hope of saving the match though.
Dr Gloom 21868
i agree theirs is a hopeless cause but all we've done is reduce the amount of time we had to bowl them out. hopefully the weather won't play a part but you never know in manchester. David Kelly 1224
Can't see this lasting until tomorrow now. Big shame about stokes. Finn back in for the rest of the series or Ball? Woakes can play the all rounder role in his absence I guess.
Alex 34954
What about Mark Wood? Or even Rashid?
Dr Gloom 21868
wood for stokes, rashid for vince? the batting line up is long enough to accommodate losing a specialist batter. we won't be losing any runs anyway if vince is dropped.
Dr Gloom 21868
finn's got a bit of work to do on his rhythm before he earns a recall. when he's on song, he should be our first change bowler, but he's got a bit of work to do in the nets.

David Kelly 1224
Aye Wood might just be coming back from injury at the right time. Took another 3 wickets for the lions yesterday, dunno if he's took any today after Bell Drummond and Ducket smashed their bowlers all over the place. But he's not played a county game this year yet has he? Edit: Doesn't look like he's played today. Edited July 25, 2016 by David Kelly

Dr Gloom 21868
which one, to play root at 3?
Alex 34954
Fair do's Doesn't solve the problem that England rely far too heavily on Root and Cook as far as the top order batting goes though. That and hoping that long tail keeps wagging.
Dr Gloom 21868
i agree with that. i'm yet to be convinced that vince or ballance are the answer either. they're supposed to be specialist batters but both look suspect at test level. i'd rather woakes was at 4 instead of vince right now on current form. though the idea to move moeen up the order could also fix that problem and perhaps give him the confidence boost that stokes got when he was bumped up to 6. in fact, if you'll forgive me for playing fantasy cricket selector for a minute, you could conceivably play an extra seamer and an extra spinner without affecting the strength of the batting line up too much. 5 seamers and two spinners in this side and they would still bat deep. cook hales root moeen bairstow stokes woakes rashid broad wood or finn (if he finds his radar) anderson

David Kelly 1224
I don't think anyone is going to forgive you for playing fantasy selector again. Wood looked like a pretty useful batsman in the Ashes too. Him as a number 10 gives us a very long tail again. Plunkett might be another option to replace Stokes. Been doing well for Yorkshire and in short forms for England recently.
David Kelly 1224
I see Stoneman is leaving Durham at the end of the season with Borthwick looking a good chance to follow him. Mustard gone now too. Really have to worry about their finances.

Been doing well for Yorkshire and in short forms for England recently. i like plunkett too. offers a bit of extra pace compared to the rest. it's amazing how many of our bowlers can bat a bit. exposes the lack of real quality top/middle order batsmen really, when you could conceivably have a team made up of so many all rounders of sorts. back in the day we were lucky to have one genuine all rounder. and as far as fantasy selections go, i'm the cricket equivalent of deano, minus the thriving gardening business. Alex 34954
Plunkett or Wood are good shouts and either should bat higher than Broad
